Were The Oscars Worth All The Hype?

I like so many watched The Academy Awards last night but as I was watching I found myself really bored. This got me wondering is Oscar really worth all the hype? The gorgeous gowns have been debuted, the envelopes have been opened and Billy Crystal did his hosting duties but all that being said was the show really that good. I personally thought Billy did a great, although very safe, job as host. He was a good choice to class back up the show after last year?s debacle that was Anne Hathaway and James Franco. Before I go off on a little tangent I do want to acknowledge the good things about the show. The theme this year was great, the speeches were fabulous and the slew of presenters, except maybe Angelina, were awesome. It was more entertaining this year than in the past but trust me that ain?t saying much. Here is my gripe with the Oscars. They are way too long, way too technical and there is too much filler crap. Seriously I was on my phone through most of the show on Twitter because it was more entertaining than The Academy Awards. I get that is it [...]

Divided into the four groups, each section has a chapter introducing the structure and function of the skin of each group, a chapter on examination and diagnostic tests, and fur List Price: $ 94.99 Price: $ 67.84 SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Japan And Eu's Economic Affairs | NY Essay

Japan and the European Union
Linked for a prosperous future

? ? ? Cultural and social ties between Japan and the members of the EU has grown significantly during the 1990?s and is still growing today.

? ? ? Both Japan and Nations from the EU are linked together in order to make peoples? life better by enriching everyone?s spiritual wealth and by offering them peaceful and respectful co-habitation. In the last couple of years; Japan?s existence has been aknowledged by a number of people who have always wanted to discover interesting things about its culture and language. Also in 2000 an Action Plan was made in which Japan and the EU promised to co-operate in order to promote peace and security, cope with global and social problems, strengthen the economy, make globalisation a benefit for everyone, and to bring together people and cultures.
? ? ? Therefore the relationship between Japan and the EU has deepened and people from the latter countries have multiple

possibilities to encounter the Japanese culture in the comfort of their own homes. Also the Minister of Education of Japan offers many scolarships every year for those who want to study to Japan in order to learn the language, have direct contact with the lifestlye in Japan, and to make friends. It?s a fact that both Japan and the EU care about each other and have common interests in developing intra-human relationships.
? ? ? Although cultural and noneconomic ties with the EU are important for both, economic relations remain by far the most important element of the Japanese-EU relationship of today. Being two of the world?s largest economies, they are trying to create an environment for trade and investment; which in my opinion, this goal has already been reached as Japanese companies have breached through the European market and have also succeded in their businesses.
? ? ? All in all Japan-EU relationships are a benefit for each and everyone of us. They are fighing together against poverty and?

Fossil footprints reveal oldest elephant herd

The world's oldest elephant tracks have now been revealed, 7 million-year-old footprints in the Arabian Desert, researchers say.

These prehistoric footsteps, likely the work of about 13 four-tusked elephant ancestors, are the earliest direct evidence of how the ancestors of modern elephants interacted socially, and the oldest evidence of an elephant herd.

"Basically, this is fossilized behavior," said researcher Faysal Bibi, a vertebrate paleontologist at the Museum for Natural History in Berlin. "This is an absolutely unique site, a really rare opportunity in the fossil record that lets you see animal behavior in a way you couldn't otherwise do with bones or teeth."

    3. Lessons learned from Japan's deadly earthquake
    4. Fossil footprints reveal oldest elephant herd

The site, known as Mleisa 1, is in the United Arab Emirates. The region then was home to a great diversity of animals, including elephants, hippopotamuses, antelopes, giraffes, pigs, monkeys, rodents, small and large carnivores, ostriches, turtles, crocodiles and fish. These were sustained by a very large river flowing slowly through the area, along which flourished vegetation, including large trees. The animals resembled those from Africa during the same time, though there are also similarities with Asian and European species of that period.?

Fossil trackways in the region have been long known to locals, and were taken to be the prints of dinosaurs or giants of ancient myth. It was not until January 2011, when researchers mapped the area from the air for the first time, "that we realized what we had and how we could go about studying it," Bibi said. [The Creatures of Cryptozoology]

"Once we saw it aerially, it became a much different and clearer story," said researcher Brian Kraatz at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif. "Seeing the whole site in one shot meant we could finally understand what was happening."

The footprints cover an area of 12.3 acres (5 hectares). This is about equal to nine U.S. football fields, seven soccer fields, or the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

"The trackways are visually stunning," said researcher Andrew Hill at the University of Poitiers in France. "It is quite obvious to anyone, without any technical knowledge, that these are the footprints of very large animals, and to learn that they are over 6 million years old presents a visitor with the sensation of walking back in time."

The researchers noted that while these prehistoric titans were proboscideans like modern elephants, they likely looked quite different. Of the three kinds of fossil proboscidean species in the area at that time, the one that most likely made the trackways was Stegotetrabelodon syrticus, the earliest known member of the elephant family, "which carried tusks in both its upper and lower jaws," Bibi told LiveScience.

The trackways stretch up to about 850 feet (260 meters) long, making them "the most extensive ever recorded for mammals, and to view them is to be transported 7 million years back in time when herds of four-tusked primitive elephants and other related behemoths roamed a wetter and more vegetated Arabian Peninsula," said paleontologist William Sanders at the University of Michigan, who did not take part in the study. [Photos of Elephant Trackways]

Actually mapping these footsteps proved challenging, since the individual tracks are each only about 15 inches (40 centimeters) wide, too small to show up in satellite imagery. To do so, researchers mounted a pocket digital camera onto a kite, stitching the hundreds of pictures it took into a single large mosaic image that gave a broad overview of the site.

Analysis of the footsteps suggests they belonged to a herd of at least 13 elephants of different sizes and ages that walked through mud, leaving behind tracks that hardened, were buried, and then re-exposed by erosion.

The researchers also discovered tracks from a solitary male traveling in a different direction from the herd. These suggest the extinct giants divided into solitary and social groups, just as elephants do today. Also, these ancient pachyderms might have structured themselves along lines of sex just as their modern relatives do, with the males leaving the herd to live alone.

"Like the human handprints in Paleolithic caves, animal trackways crystallize in time [the] identity and behavior of the organisms that made them, and yield rare insights about these organisms, which fossil bones alone cannot provide," Sanders said.

The scientists detailed their findings online in the journal Biology Letters.

How To Do Home Improvements Without A Loan | ArticleGoes - Free ...

Fixing up your home the way you want to, without taking a loan out, is viable if you know how. Home improvements, for the most part, do not require a lot of work or renovation. By removing clutter from your rooms, doing a little cleaning, and painting, you can improve the look of your home quite dramatically without spending too much. Instead of contacting the loan company, look around your house and see what you can do on your own without spending all that money. After reading this article, you will know how to improve the look of your home without spending money that you dont have.

Have you thought about replacing your windows? On top of looking better, double pane windows will help you save money on your energy bills. You will definitely benefit from installing double pane windows; you will be warmer and cooler during the winter and summer, respectively. The windows, actually, do not have to cost a lot of money. Saving money on your new window installation could actually begin with putting them in yourself. Just go to your local home improvement store and ask them which windows you should get for your home.

Does your home have hardwood floors already installed? Using carpet, instead of a hardwood floor, might be better for your home. Perhaps you have a lot of carpet in your home. Putting in hardwood or tile flooring might be a better option. If you have a large home, it could take several days; if you have a small home, you could probably install the flooring on a weekend. If you know how to rip up old carpet, you can put your flooring down in no time at all. Carpeting is much more difficult than putting laminated flooring so you may want to stick with what is easier. Instead of taking on a project that you will never be able to accomplish, consult with a professional to find out if this is something you can actually finish.

Your home needs to be as efficient as possible in the use of energy. Take out the old, traditional light bulbs, and replace them with new, compact fluorescent light bulbs, which are more energy-efficient. It is a very good idea to turn off your electrical appliances, and then unplug them, when not in use, and this includes your microwave and television set. With all of the electronic devices and appliances now being sold, the energy-efficient ones should be your choice. Your computer should be turned off when not in use. Your home can be made energy-efficient in many ways, along with reducing your carbon footprint. This is an easy home improvement to make and maybe the best. Borrowing money is not necessary for doing any of the things previously discussed. There are many suggestions to improve your house talked about in this article, and none of them will require extra money. Any time you have a small problem and dont get it fixed, it will eventually turn into a big problem that could be expensive. When you have a limited budget and dont want to get a loan, this is the best way to manage your home improvements.

Most of the time the biggest cost of home improvement comes from hiring someone to do the work for you. It can be very costly if you want to do too much. Depending upon how much money you have to work with, and how much time you have, you may want to only remodel a few rooms at a time instead of doing a full home-improvement project. Be practical and give it some thought and you will see that, most of the time, theres no need to spend a fortune. Comcast backs Diddy, Magic Johnson channels

Comcast will launch four minority-owned networks on its cable-TV systems in the next two years, including channels spearheaded by music mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and NBA great Magic Johnson.

Two of the networks are majority black-owned while two are majority American-Hispanic-owned, with all of them programming in English, the Philadelphia-based Comcast said.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal. Comcast holds a controlling interest in the latter.)

It was unclear how much of an on-camera role, if any, Combs and Johnson might play on their respective network.

The new channels, which in all will total 10 rolling out in the next eight years, are part of an agreement reached by Comcast with the FCC and Department of Justice when it was allowed to become majority owner of NBCUniversal.

The networks announced Tuesday include:

Revolt, conceived by Combs and MTV veteran Andy Schuon, will have programming that includes music videos, live performances, music news and interviews.

"Revolt is the first channel created entirely from the ground up in this new era of social media," said Combs, who described the channel as "immediate, like today's social networks."

In a video posted on YouTube, Combs said Revolt will put artists in charge.

"It's your channel to do what you want to do, how you want to do it," he said, addressing them, with the result "uncut, raw, uncensored."

Revolt is scheduled to launch in 2013.

Aspire, to be led by Johnson in partnership with family-oriented channel GMC TV, will dedicate itself to enlightening and positive programming aimed at black families. It will air movies, documentaries, music and comedy, as well as faith and inspirational programs.

"Aspire will be a network that encourages and challenges African-Americans to reach for their dreams," said Johnson, adding that it "will celebrate our heritage, our groundbreaking achievements and the fearless talent that has shaped American culture."

It will launch this summer.

El Rey, proposed by Hollywood director Robert Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures executives John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa, is designed to be an action-packed, general entertainment network for Latino and general audiences. The programming mix will include reality, scripted and animated series, and will feature Hispanic producers, celebrities and public figures.

"We are passionate about creating a wildly entertaining destination that we can be proud of by appealing to both Latino and mass market audiences," said Rodriguez, a successful filmmaker known for the "Spy Kids" films.

El Rey is scheduled to debut by January 2014.

BabyFirst Americas, from Spanish-language TV veteran Constantino "Said" Schwarz, is designed for infants and very young children, as well as their parents. It will emphasize the importance of early development of verbal, math and motor skills, the network said.

"BabyFirst Americas aims to bring the essential academic building blocks for kindergarten readiness into the home," Schwarz said.

The first of the networks to arrive, it is planned to be on the air this April.

These four networks, and the six others yet to be announced, are being chosen from more than 100 proposals, Comcast said. Each will be added as part of Comcast's digital basic tier of service.

The company, which is the nation's largest cable TV provider, did not mention in its announcement other cable systems planning to carry the new networks.

Orland Park resident has big hopes for rotisserie restaurant in Tinley ...

John Mihalos wants area residents to know fast food doesn?t have to be greasy or deep-fried.

With his new restaurant Chicken Wild, which opened in Tinley Park this month, he hopes to prove fast food can be tasty and healthy, but still come at a quick pace and affordable price.

?We want them to know there is an alternative to burgers. That there is an alternative to fried food,? he said. ?It?s like a home-cooked meal, but at a fast food pace.?

Mihalos?said he has been conceptualizing Chicken Wild for more than 15 years. Based on cooking styles he learned as a boy in Greece, all meat served at Chicken Wild is cooked on a rotisserie with fresh spices and olive oil, and all side dishes are cooked each day with fresh ingredients.

?It?s a Mediterranean style of cooking that uses nothing but the finest ingredients,? he said.

Still, customers can dine in, carry out or have their food delivered, with individual meals ranging from $4.99 to $7.99.

?The type of food that we serve here, it?s normally served in four- and five-star restaurants, we just brought it into a level where economically it can make sense in the fast food industry,? he said.

Mihalos? history in the restaurant business started as a child in Greece where his grandmother operated an eatery below their family home. On the wall of Chicken Wild are traces of his beginnings with photographs of his family and of himself sitting next to a rotisserie as a young boy.

He moved from Greece to Oak Lawn when he was 13 and carried on the family tradition by working in the restaurant industry himself. He previously ran two family dining restaurants in Oak Park as well as beef and hot dog stands, yogurt shops and more in and around Chicago. For the past 10 years, he has worked mostly as a consultant but after some serious research and planning, he stepped back into the ownership role.

The Orland Park resident said he picked his new location in the former Starbucks storefront at the corner of 159th Street and Harlem Avenue to test the Chicken Wild concept. If all goes well, he has big plans for expansion.

?We have a vision of taking this to the next level and having many, many stores, first in the Chicago area, and then everywhere else we can,? he said.

Still, he plans to take the business slow. He said he will likely have a ribbon cutting event and increase his advertising in a month or so, for now he wants to the time to train his employees and work out the kinks before attracting too much attention.

?It?s a matter of wanting to do the right thing at the right speed,? he said. ?We?re looking for the long term gain, not the short term momentum.?

Unusual, Winning Combination for School Readiness! ? Grand ...

I?ve made a great discovery!

Spectacular visuals; charming, fun-to-sing lyrics; and toe-tapping music all packed into a children?s video.? Is this for real?? Yes! And you and your grands will watch them over and over and over again.

This is a departure for me.

Not something I usually promote, when writing about school readiness.? My experience has been that most children?s videos are nothing more than passive activity. When I saw the Sea Tunes for Kids video playing at a store recently, I was intrigued.? Enough to come home, order it and watch it with one of my 3? year old grandsons.? Then, sent one to my other 3? year old grandson and his 7 year old sister. Well, we?re all hooked! (Pun intended.) According to my son, his children were captivated by the video, loved the music and quickly learned the lyrics.

Photographic images from Sea Tunes for Kids DVD

Let me tell you why this is such a different children?s video; it?s just one of the Fun Tunes for Kids series. The up-close photography is amazing!? The underwater footage is incredible. Unusual sea creatures right in front of you on the screen, as if you could reach out and touch them.? Yes, there are fabulous videos of octopus, whales, dolphins, tortoise, puffer fish and all the others you probably know.? But ever heard of a lion fish, leafy seahorse or nautilus?

That?s not all.? Enchanting lyrics are quickly learned and great fun to sing; the rhythm is easy to follow. Everyone will have their favorites.? We love ?Billy the Squid? and ?When You Find a Manatee in Your Bathtub? (Sea Tunes), while ?There Ain?t No Bugs on Me? (Bear Tunes), ?Backpack Tree? (Moose Tunes) and ?When A Horse Walks into Your Birthday Party? (Horse Tunes) are more of our favorite segments.

The stunning pictures captured our attention immediately and both of us kept saying, ?Wow, look at that!?? all the while tapping our feet to the accompanying music. ?After viewing and listening to Seriously Silly Songs, a compilation of DVDs, I asked my grandson what he liked best.? His reply? ?I liked them all!?

Singer/songwriter Brent Holmes has great fun dressing in costumes throughout his series entitled ?Island Tunes for Kids? and ?Cow Tunes for Kids? with appropriate backdrops and songs about the islands of Hawaii, the Caribbean and the Bahamas.? I chuckled, when he appeared on screen in his island outfits and saw the humorous props. The silliness of ?A cow in striped pajamas dancing in the Bahamas? and ?Welcome to Bermooda? kept me smiling throughout the DVD.

What about school readiness?

School readiness is encouraged by exposing children to a range of experiences and skills.? This series offers many ways to extend children?s learning opportunities.

Imagination

Intriguing story lines, colorful song characters and silly, vivid language throughout the series will engage children from toddlers to elementary school. Manatees in the bathtub? Horses at a birthday party? What a delightful introduction to storytelling, play acting and imaginative play. As I wrote in my January/February GRAND digital magazine column,? imagination is the engine of ideas , quoting Einstein, ?Imagination is more important than knowledge.?

Pre-Reading and Language Development

Ever heard of ?phonological awareness??? It?s when children develop an ear for the way words sound; can identify different sounds; and can identify groups of sounds in words. These auditory skills in addition to developing listening skills are key pre-reading skills.

Poems and rhyming song verses use words to paint ?word pictures?; the lyrics in these videos activate that awareness. The rhythm of songs, poems and rhymes help children remember words and develop an appreciation for rhyme and rhythm?both of which build memory and auditory skills necessary for language development and reading.

While you sing, play and act out these silly songs (as well as standard nursery rhymes) together, you convey to your grands that sounds make words and words are fun! Making learning fun is what sparks children?s continued interest in discovering new knowledge and skills.

How To Build A Responsive Buyers List In Real Estate Investing ...

uccessful real estate investing largely depends on selling the houses you acquire quickly.? This is true whether you sell them at wholesale prices to other real estate investors or to retail buyers, or even selling on terms such as lease options.

?Building relationships with people looking to buy the houses you sell is the biggest asset in real estate investing.

?Building and maintain a responsive list of potential buyers is the subject of this article.

Your buyers list is your most valuable asset and should be tended very gently.?? You will get more sales from more responsive lists.

There are two types of buyers lists:

1)??? Wholesale Buyers List

?This is a list of people looking to buy properties at wholesale prices, usually real estate investors.? If you are a wholesaler or sell some of your properties at wholesale prices, then building this list is a must.

2)??? Home buyers list

?These buyers are looking for homes to live in.? In most cases they are not looking to buy investment properties.

The most common type of buyers list is the list of buyers looking for houses with creative financing such as lease options.

?The most responsive buyers list is located in your local market.??? A list of nationwide buyers is less response.

?This means that as long as you have a responsive buyers list, you may not need a big list to move your deals.

?Someone who has not bought a house in a year or more is of little to no value in your buyers list.

How to build a responsive buyers list

In order to build a buyers list, you must have the following things in order:

1)??? Get a real estate investor website

You cannot build a buyers list of they do not have somewhere to sign up.??? This is why you must have a website.

?You must be able to create lists on your website, or it should be already be integrated with buyers lists.? They can then sign up to your list as necessary.

?The ability to create squeeze pages or landing pages that ask for contact information before they can view the properties is an added advantage.

?Alternatively, they have to provide their contact information before they can view full property details.

2)??? Advertise your properties

No matter which method you use to advertise the properties you have for sale, you must provide your web address prominently.?? A phone number is not enough; it will not collect a buyer list for you.

?This is done by a real estate investor website.? Whether you advertise through bandit signs, radio, newspapers, Craigslist, etc, you must provide your website address.

I built my first buyers list by advertising my wholesale deals on our local newspaper, Dallas Morning News.? I provided my website address instead of a phone number.

?To access full property details, they had to provide their contact information.?? From this ad, I ended up building a list of about 200 buyers.? They pretty much bought every deal I found.??? In most cases, I would get a buyer the same day I sent out my wholesale deal.

FCC plans to suspend LightSquared's land network (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. communications regulators dealt a severe blow on Tuesday to LightSquared's plans to establish a high-speed wireless network, proposing to withdraw authority for the land-based portion after government experts said it would interfere with the GPS system.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said it proposed to suspend indefinitely LightSquared's authority to transition its satellite spectrum to ground-based use.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which manages military and government spectrum use, said on Tuesday that LightSquared's planned network would interfere with the global positioning system and there was no practical way to immediately solve the problem.

In a letter to the FCC, the NTIA said its finding was based on testing and analyses, as well as talks with LightSquared.

"If they can't develop terrestrial broadband services, then they have to go back to the drawing board," said Roe Equity Research analyst Kevin Roe.

Roe said LightSquared was not viable with only satellite services given the money already spent and debt incurred to start its ground network. He said he would not be surprised if the company challenged the FCC ruling in court.

LightSquared has said the NTIA's assessment of its planned network relied on flawed conclusions but was not immediately available to respond to the FCC's action.

LightSquared intended to invest $14 billion over the next eight years to build its network, which would sell wholesale wireless services to companies which would then resell the service under their own brand names.

But government testing found that the land-based portion of the network would overpower the weaker signals received by military and civilian GPS devices that serve purposes ranging from guiding weapons to planting crops.

LightSquared has argued that any interference is a result of poorly designed GPS receivers that GPS manufacturers should be obliged to fix.

It spent more than $1 million on lobbying efforts in Washington to try to gain approval for its wireless network, but was engaged in an uphill battle as opponents including companies such as Deere & Co, Delta Airlines and Trimble Navigation Ltd pointed to safety and national security risks associated with interference to GPS.

Hedge fund manager Philip Falcone has made a huge bet on the startup wireless broadband company, sinking more than $3 billion from his Harbinger Capital Partners hedge fund into LightSquared.

Falcone told investors that his Harbinger Capital Partners lost 46.6 percent last year after he dramatically marked down the value of the LightSquared holdings in the fund, an investor familiar with the matter said earlier in the month. A spokesman for Falcone confirmed the losses.

LightSquared has said previously it has just several quarters worth of cash left and its network partner, Sprint Nextel, had given it a mid-March deadline for FCC approval.

"With LightSquared set to run out of money in the near future, it must now consider whether to file for bankruptcy and preserve its resources for the inevitable litigation fights, or continue pretending that all of its problems can be overcome while its cash drains away," said Tim Farrar, an independent satellite industry analyst.

Bahraini police fire teargas at protesters (Reuters)

Manama (Reuters) ? Bahraini police fired teargas and stun grenades to stop mainly Shi'ite protesters trying to march towards the roundabout at the centre of a failed pro-democracy uprising last year and detained two American rights activists who came to monitor.

The activists had come as part of a group called Witness Bahrain which says it wants to observe events on the eve of the first anniversary of protests led mainly by the Shi'ite majority for democratic reforms in the Gulf Arab state.

An official said they would be deported for giving false information about the nature of their visit on entering Bahrain.

Bahraini forces crushed the movement, with help from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, but escaped heavy censure from the United States, which shares Saudi fears that empowering Shi'ites in Bahrain would expand Shi'ite Iran's influence in the Gulf.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet is based in the island kingdom.

Groups of several hundred activists gathered at different points around Manama's old market district in an apparent effort to evade riot police, before suddenly marching towards the roundabout, now renamed al-Farouq Junction.

"To the roundabout, to the roundabout," chanted protesters, led by prominent rights activist Nabil Rajab. Behind them, police using megaphones warned the crowd that the march was unauthorized and they should disperse. Police then fired teargas and stun grenades at the march.

Riot police seized the two Americans, Huwaida Arraf and Radhika Sainath, part of a team of activists calling themselves Witness Bahrain who are monitoring protests this week.

Police broke up a crowd of women protesters in an altercation over the arrest of the women activists, after police officers cornered Rajab in an effort to stop the march in a busy commercial district.

"In the coming days and weeks, Witness Bahrain will stand with people taking to the streets to demand democracy, equality and respect for human rights," the group said in a statement.

"Witness Bahrain will also maintain a presence in villages active in pro-democracy protests which are being subjected to night raids, teargassing and other attacks by the police."

Some rights activists were denied entry to Bahrain last month. Egypt's military rulers have began legal action against Americans and Egyptians for activities with non-government organizations that they say was not legal or authorized.

Rajab said after police left that the protests would continue. "This proves to everybody that peoples' spirit is still alive and coming back, and we're not going to go away," he told Reuters.

Demonstrations, sometimes organized by leading Shi'ite opposition party Wefaq with government approval, have grown in number and frequency as the February 14 anniversary of the uprising approaches.

But youth protesters in Shi'ite villages have also clashed with security forces, throwing petrol bombs and iron bars and blocking roads with burning tyres.

Activists say at least two people have died in police custody in the past month and others have died from apparent effects of teargas, taking the total dead since February 14, 2011 to over 60. The government disputes the causes of death.

Bahrain's Sunni rulers have given parliament some more powers of scrutiny over ministers and budgets, but are resisting opposition demands that the elected parliament be given the power to approve cabinet appointments.

Sunnis who had gathered at the al-Fateh mosque for a rally led by pro-government cleric Sheikh Abdul-Latif Al Mahmood said they were worried the Al Khalifa family-led government would give in to Wefaq's demands for parliament to form the cabinet.

They said Shi'ites were using violence for political gain.

"We want to send a message to the government that we are against the terrorism and the government should listen to us as well," said a housewife who gave her name as Nour.

"We are afraid. Bahrain was a land of peace, where we didn't lock our doors at night and women would go out without fear of anybody," said Hala Ahmed, a doctor.

They said Sunnis were moving out of some districts because of the continuing clashes between police and youths.

Asked if he could agree with the opposition demand for a Western-style parliamentary democracy, Nader Mohamed said: "In the long run, yes, why not? But no in the current situation."

Satellite tracking reveals sea turtle feeding hotspots

Monday, February 6, 2012

Satellite tracking of threatened loggerhead sea turtles has revealed two previously unknown feeding 'hotspots' in the Gulf of Mexico that are providing important habitat for at least three separate populations of the turtles, according to a study published recently in the journal Biological Conservation.

The two sites, located in the open waters off the coast of Southwest Florida and the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, were found by a team of scientists when they compiled and analyzed loggerhead tracking data.

The researchers' goal was to synthesize tracking data from three genetically distinct loggerhead populations to learn more about how they use the Gulf of Mexico. By identifying the specific location of regularly used habitat, the results provide invaluable information for marine planning and management for this species, whose populations in the Gulf of Mexico are well below historic levels and in recent years have continued to decline drastically in some areas.

The maritime feeding grounds also hold the first clues about how loggerhead sea turtles spend time at sea ? which is, in essence, most of their lives.

"Up until now, management actions that affect loggerheads have often focused on their limited time at nesting beaches, or on fisheries regulations," said Kristen Hart, Ph.D., the U.S. Geological Survey research ecologist who led the synthesis. "Our findings open up important new options for marine habitat conservation, and provide valuable geographic data that can be used to strategically locate marine reserves based on the best available science, as called for in the new National Ocean Policy."

"The use of satellite tags for tracking marine animals has opened our eyes to the secret lives of some of nature's most elusive creatures," said USGS director Marcia McNutt, "At first a scientific tool to understand the life cycle of animals, such as white sharks and leatherback turtles, who rarely come into contact with humans, these tags may now be the main hope for understanding what we can do, or what we should stop doing, in order to bring them back from the road to extinction."

Researchers intercepted female loggerheads after their nesting forays to beaches and outfitted them with satellite tags at study sites in the Florida Panhandle, Casey Key in southwest Florida, and Dry Tortugas National Park. They then tracked the females' migrations and used a new method to determine precisely when they had arrived at "hotspot" foraging areas, in two geographically different locations.

Seven female turtles migrated to foraging sites off Southwest Florida, while the other three took up residence at foraging sites at the Yucatan site. Once the researchers applied the new method for synthesizing their satellite-tracking data, it became clear that these loggerhead turtles from all three populations consistently converged around two common sites. This confirmed a hunch that the researchers had developed after years of tracking turtles.

At both of the feeding hotspots, turtles selected individual sites where they foraged in shallow or nearshore waters less than fifty meters deep. Turtles appeared to prefer their own distinct territories, where they tended to remain resident. This suggests that it may be possible to accurately predict where sea turtles will feed, information that will prove vital for managers looking to focus conservation efforts on prime foraging habitat.

Researchers don't yet know what attracts loggerheads from around the Gulf to these specific feeding areas, although generally, loggerheads forage on the bottom of the sea floor for crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters, clams or conchs.

"The logical next step is to investigate what makes these particular sites 'prime' foraging grounds by mapping and sampling the habitat types found on the sea floor," explained Hart. "It would also be useful to tag loggerheads at these foraging sites to confirm how long they reside in these areas, or alternatively to see where they go next."

Lana Del Rey 'Compelled' By Britney Spears

Label boss Jimmy Iovine calls criticism 'a drag.'
By Gil Kaufman

<P>To look at her, you'd think <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rey_lana_del/artist.jhtml"_blank">Lana Del Rey's</a> inspirations come mostly from 1940s detective movies and sepia-toned Hollywood pinups. But the "Video Games" singer told England's Magic 105.4 that one of her big fashion and music icons is Britney Spears. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724891.id:1677189" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I'm not really interested in a ton of female musicians but there is something about Britney that compelled me &#8212; the way she sings and just the way she looks," Del Rey said. And even though she's just released her major-label debut under the Del Rey name, she added that she's already kind of over music-making. "The thing that makes me happy now isn't really singing," she said. "Music was once the be-all and end-all, but when you lose everything you have over and over again, it's not so important." It might be a bit early for her to bail on the whole music thing though, since her album, <I>Born to Die</I>, topped the iTunes album charts in 14 countries this week, including the U.S., U.K., Italy, France, Germany, Ireland and Mexico. The chart triumph &#8212; and a possible #2 debut next week on the <I>Billboard</i> albums tally &#8212; came despite a rash of negative or <a href="/news/articles/1678050/lana-del-rey-album-born-to-die-reviews.jhtml">middling reviews</a>&#8232; of the album as well as the continuing fallout from her shaky <a href="/news/articles/1677389/lana-del-rey-snl.jhtml">"Saturday Night Live"</a>&#8232; debut last month. The haterade has gotten her label boss, Interscope's Jimmy Iovine, to chime in on the flack his latest protégé has been taking. "It's a drag," Iovine told <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/lana-del-rey-backlash-jimmy-iovine-286378" target="_blank"><I>The Hollywood Reporter</I></a>. "Maybe this is a new sport. It's something we've never seen before. Or maybe it's [like] the Giants and the Jets." Del Rey herself told <I>Rolling Stone</I> that she thought she looked "beautiful" and sang "fine" on the show, saying that "that's just the way I perform, and my fans know that." Say what you want about Del Rey's looks, attitude and performance ability, but Iovine said there is one thing you can't mess with. Musically, he thinks <I>Die</I> is "really good. Great lyrics and great songs. I don't care what anybody says, 'Video Games' is a great song. When she sings that song, it moves me. It's how we signed her &#8212; she sang and it was beautiful. I think she's really talented. Period."</p>
