Teen faces life sentence in slaying of UK tourists

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) ? In a case that generated blaring tabloid headlines in the U.K. press, a Florida teen is facing life in prison without parole for murdering two young British tourists who got lost and wandered into a housing project where their convicted killer lived.

After an eight-day trial, a jury on Wednesday convicted 17-year-old Shawn Tyson of two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting of James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, last April.

The two men were on a three-week Sarasota holiday and spent an evening drinking when they got lost.

Both were considered fun-loving world travelers by those who knew them. Their friends Paul Davis and Joe Hallett said the pair had a knack for making friends with people of all ages and races. Cooper had traveled to Australia and loved tennis; he was a tennis pro in his hometown and had played against countryman Andy Murray. Kouzaris played rugby, taught English in Taiwan and had traveled through Central America prior to visiting Sarasota.

The men were in Florida staying with Cooper's family on a Gulf coast beach near Sarasota and on April 15, they dined and drank downtown.

Authorities said both were drunk when they got lost and accidentally wandered just before 3 a.m. into the housing project where Tyson lived.

Witnesses testified that Tyson told them he saw two "crackers" ? a derogatory term for white people ? walking through the neighborhood and that he intended to rob them. The tourists said they didn't have any money and begged Tyson to let them go home. The men also told Tyson they were lost.

"Since you ain't got no money, then I have something for your ass," Tyson recounted to a witness, then added that he shot the men several times.

Hallett said friends and family were thankful for the support provided by Sarasota police and municipal officials.

And Davis, who attended the trial, said although he was satisfied with the verdict, it rang hollow.

"Ours is a life sentence with no chance of parole for a broken heart and a shattered soul," Davis said.

Both men also said they were "dissatisfied" with the lack of support or condolences from the United States government and President Barack Obama in particular.

"We would like to publicly express our dissatisfaction at the lack of any public or private message of support or condolence," Joe Hallett, a friend of the two victims said.

Tyson did not show emotion as Davis and Hallett spoke. Neither did Tyson's mother, who was also present.

Kouzaris was from Northampton and Cooper was from Hampton Lucy, Warwick. Since their deaths, friends and family have started a foundation to prevent youth violence in the United Kingdom.

The tourists' bodies were found shirtless on the street and their baggy pants were pulled down to their thighs. Both men still had their wallets and did in fact have money; Cooper also had a cellphone and camera in his pants pocket. Authorities later found that Kouzaris' blood alcohol level was 0.243 and Cooper's was 0.214 ? well past Florida's legal limit for intoxication when driving, which is 0.08.

During closing arguments, Assistant State Attorney Ed Brodsky told the jury that the case was about "opportunities."

"For James Cooper and James Kouzaris, they had seized an opportunity to travel abroad," Brodsky said. "Shawn Tyson seized upon an opportunity to rob and kill two men."

Tyson was portrayed as an angry teen, one who had the word "Savage" tattooed on his chest and who loved a movie about Jamaican gangs so much that he quoted it when talking to his friends about the murders.

In the end, Tyson was his own undoing. Several prosecution witnesses said Tyson told friends about the shootings in the hours after the killings, then asked friends to hide the murder weapon and bury bullets. A DNA expert said Tyson's skin cells were found on Cooper's jeans.

Tyson maintained to police that he was at home during the murders. But witnesses spotted him crawling into his window shortly after hearing gunshots.

Tyson did not testify. His attorneys called only one witness, a crime scene technician, and questioned him briefly. Defense attorneys also tried to discredit the witnesses by saying many of them had criminal records and cooperated with detectives to avoid jail time.

After the jury rendered its verdict, prosecutors played two videos from the parents of Cooper and Kouzaris. The videos depicted both men from birth, showing everything from happy baby photos to school pictures to sports teams. The final photo was of the two men laughing for the camera on a white sand beach.

"They will haunt your thoughts forever," Hallett told Tyson in the courtroom. "Every night you go to sleep, every morning you wake up, I want you to think of my friends who were murdered."

So, about those ?flaws:?

Dynamic formations and shrewd, fluid arrangements of so much attacking talent doesn?t mean a thing, as we can see, if the old-fashioned elements of leadership and want-to come up missing. Or, perhaps, were never there in the first place. Without the benefit of meaningful matches to test these elements over the last few months well, you never really know until you know. You know?

Some nervous indecision near goal nearly turned disastrous as Opara almost sneaked one past Bill Hamid at the near post in the first half. ?He got all turned around on a Canadian break midway through the second half, and then completely lost his mark on Canada?s second goal.

Opara can definitely can be a bother on offensive set-plays. But that?s not enough, and that spot looks like a real doozey of a U.S. problem.

The first Canadian strike was clearly on goalkeeper Bill Hamid, whose inexperience became a crusher. He was way too timid in claiming what should have been a routine ball into his six-yard box. By failing to grab the floating corner kick at its highest possible point (Goalkeeping 101) and not attacking the moment with authority, he turned a fairly benign cross into a fiasco.

Freddy Adu isn?t playing badly, really, but he?s sure not anything to shout about, either. Bottom line: he?s not doing enough. The U.S. captain (and most experienced international man) must press the game more and ask further questions of defenders in front of him. He?s quite competent in helping the Americans keep possession in the middle third. But he?s not stretching defenders the way Brek Shea did on the left (for a half Saturday, anyway). And when Adu came into the middle after the break, he was even less effective, never establishing himself as the playmaker Porter apparently asked him to be in a halftime tactical adjustment.

Speaking of that tactical adjustment: it didn?t work. Not at all. Joe Corona, Thursday?s three-goal scorer, wasn?t finding the spaces that he did against Cuba?s awful defense. And, as noted, Adu wasn?t having his best night on the right wing. So Porter removed Corona, switched Shea to the right, redeployed Adu to attacking midfielder and added Joe Gyau to the left. Result: things got worse. Only in the last, desperate 10 minutes did the Americans begin seriously threatening Canadian goal. Down by two at that point, it was too late.

Commercial Radio Standards ? Regulation Impact Statement ...

On 21 March 2012, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) announced new Commercial Radio Standards that strengthen the rules on advertising and the disclosure of commercial influence on commercial radio programs.

The ACMA reformed the Disclosure and Advertising Standards and chose to revoke the Compliance Program Standard. The ACMA?s reforms to the Disclosure Standard:

• Require disclosure of both presenter agreements with sponsors and licensee agreements (where the presenter has an interest in the licensee company, which in turn has a commercial agreement with a sponsor);
• Allow current affairs presenters more flexibility in how they identify sponsorship arrangements; and
• Change the register and formal notifications process so that industry can keep online registers without the need for formal notices to the ACMA.

The reforms to the Advertising Standard aim to make it clear that advertising must be distinguishable from other program material at the time of broadcast, rather than later in the segment.

The Compliance Program Standard, which required commercial radio licensees to undertake compliance education and audits, will be revoked.

The Regulation Impact Statement was prepared by the ACMA and assessed as adequate by the Office of Best Practice Regulation.

Colorectal Cancer 101: Increase Your Awareness | Focus on Cancer

Cary B. Aarons, MD, is an assistant professor of surgery in colon and rectal surgery. In this blog, he discusses colorectal cancer, it?s causes, screening and treatment options, including surgery.

Among adults, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States. It is also the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths every year.

These statistics generally mean very little to the average person until they are faced with a colorectal cancer diagnosis. Then, at least initially, nothing else seems more significant.

Fortunately, the overall prognosis is quite favorable if colorectal cancer is discovered early. Up to 90 percent of patients whose colorectal cancer is diagnosed and treated in the early stages can be cured.

Most colon and rectal cancers begin as adenomas, or small polyps, that can progress over time and invade the wall of the bowel. In their later stages, colon and rectal cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body.

Know your risk for colorectal cancer

Roughly 75 percent of colorectal cancers occur in individuals who have an average risk of developing the disease. However, certain factors have been identified that can increase your risk, including:

• Age: Most people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are over 50.
• A personal history of colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer
• Inflammatory bowel disease: Chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn?s disease, can increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
• Family history of colorectal cancer: First-degree relatives of individuals with colorectal cancer are at increased risk of developing cancer themselves.
• Inherited colorectal cancer syndromes: Genetic syndromes present in some families, such as, familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC), can increase the risk of colon cancer.
• Racial/Ethnic background: African Americans have a higher incidence of colorectal cancer as compared to other groups in the United States.
• Lifestyle factors: A diet high in fat and low in fiber as well as obesity can increase the risk for colorectal cancer.

Colorectal screening saves lives

Since the early 1980s, the mortality from colorectal cancer has decreased steadily in the United States. In large part, these declines can be attributed to increased awareness and more pervasive screening. However, recent data show that one in three adults between the ages of 50 and 75 are not up to date on recommended screening for colorectal cancer.

Common screening tests for individuals of average risk include:
Fecal occult blood test - recommended annually
Flexible sigmoidoscopy OR double contrast barium enema - recommended every five years
OR
Colonoscopy - recommended every 10 years

Screening should begin at age 50 for the average person.

Other modalities such as CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) and stool DNA testing are also being used but have not been widely adopted.

Individuals at increased risk (see risk factors outlined above) should be screened more frequently with colonoscopy.

Lawsuit against legal publisher raises interesting questions of ...

A case involving copyright in legal documents has been launched in Canada.

Lorne Waldman, a human rights lawyer, has been given the go-ahead by a judge in Ontario for a class action against Thomson Reuters Corp.

Documents drafted by Mr Waldman and other lawyers have been collected by Thomson Reuter from court records and are being offered to other lawyers for a fee from their online database and retrieval service known as ?Litigator.?

In his class action, Mr. Waldman alleges that Thomson Reuters infringe the copyright of the class members by making available, without permission and for a fee, copies of court documents authored by the lawyers and the law firms.

The key issue turns on whether lawyers can claim copyright protection for documents that are available on public court files. A major element of the plaintiffs? case is that Thomson Reuter are using the materials for commercial profit. The defendants maintain that their action is justified on the basis of freedom of expression and that the case would limit access to court documents if it were to succeed.

It will be interesting to see the outcome in due course, not least as it raises the question of what value society should place on the reproduction of a lawyer?s work ? a topic of interest to the ContractStore team!

City's title hopes to be lifted by Tevez's return

LONDON (AP) -Two months after writing off Carlos Tevez's career at Manchester City, manager Roberto Mancini could welcome back the Argentina forward in Wednesday's Premier League match against Chelsea in a bid to give his team's faltering title challenge a lift.

Tevez has been training with City for the past month after ending his long-standing rift with the club, which started when he refused to warm up during a Champions League match against Bayern Munich in September.

City lost its five-month lead in the title race to Manchester United last week and is now four points behind after the champions' 5-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The ousted leaders' game in hand is against fifth-place Chelsea, which is just outside the Champions League places but has been revitalized since the dismissal of manager Andre Villas-Boas at the start of the month.

"He's like a new signing," City defender Joleon Lescott said of the potential return of Tevez, the team's former captain. "All the boys are excited and can't wait for him to get playing again.

"Over the last two years he has probably performed at the highest consistent level as anyone else, so none of us discourage what Carlos has done for the club and obviously what he continues to do."

Chelsea is in a fight for the final two Champions League qualification places with London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal, who are also in midweek action.

Third-place Tottenham, which is 13 points behind City, hosts Stoke while Arsenal, a point further back in fourth and three clear of Chelsea, visits Everton on Wednesday.

Seventh-place Liverpool needs to beat relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers to keep alive its fading hopes of a top-four finish.

Tottenham said Monday that its match against Stoke will go ahead as scheduled, four days after the team was involved in an FA Cup game in which Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the field.

Muamba is still critically ill in a London hospital, with the world of football having united in support of the former England Under-21 player.

Some of Tottenham's players appeared visibly distressed following the 23-year-old Muamba's collapse.

"It is possible that the effects of this could hit some quicker than others and despite these difficult circumstances, we all have to pull together and carry on with our season," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said. "We will be providing players with whatever support they need in order to help them move on from what has happened, while obviously always keeping Fabrice at the forefront of our minds and willing him to make a recovery."

Tottenham has lost its last three league games, boosting Arsenal's hopes of claiming third place.

"We've only finished in the top four once. It's not as if we have been there every year," Redknapp said. "If we finish in the top four, we have over-punched our weight to be perfectly truthful. We will have way exceeded expectations."

If Tevez does appear at the Etihad Stadium, his return will come nearly two months to the day that Mancini said it would be "impossible" for the striker to stay at City if he failed to secure a move away in the January transfer window.

Tevez has since repented, apologizing for his conduct following an unauthorized three-month absence spent at home in Argentina.

"Obviously the situation was not great for the club and it looked bad for everyone, but it was dealt with and the bright side is now that we have got him back and got him in the team again," Lescott said.

Bosnia international Edin Dzeko's form has dipped in recent months and he could be the striker to make way for Tevez against Chelsea, which has won four matches in a row since Roberto Di Matteo took temporary charge following the firing of Villas-Boas.

The latest victory was a 5-2 win over Leicester in the FA Cup quarterfinals, when Fernando Torres ended a career-worst scoreless streak of 26 games by scoring two goals.

"Hopefully his confidence is going to be high," Di Matteo said of the Spain striker.

It?s hard enough for you to witness and accept Mom or Dad?s strange behaviors brought on by Alzheimer?s disease, let alone help your children understand why the loving grandparents they once knew now act differently. But it?s important to talk to even the youngest members of the family and explain what?s happening to Grandma or Grandpa.

Kids may easily become confused, upset or scared if a family member with Alzheimer?s forgets their name, says something inappropriate or becomes angry and violent for no reason. Unpredictable or bizarre behaviors may cause children and teens to avoid spending time with their grandparents, causing both parties to miss out on an important relationship.

Here are some helpful phrases to use in explaining Alzheimer?s disease to your kids and teens:

• ?Grandma has a disease called Alzheimer?s. It causes her to forget things and act differently then she used to. But Grandma is still there inside, underneath the disease.?
• ?You can?t catch Alzheimer?s disease from being around Grandpa. His brain just doesn?t work as well as it used to.?
• ?I know what Uncle Bill said upset you, but remember that wasn?t him talking, it was his Alzheimer?s. He can?t control the way he acts anymore.?
• ?You didn?t do anything wrong. Sometimes Aunt Mary?s disease causes her to get angry or upset, but she?s not angry or upset at you.?
• ?Being around Nana might make you uncomfortable, but remember she doesn?t know that what she?s doing is weird. She?s not doing it on purpose.?
• ?When Grandad does or says something silly, we can play pretend. If he thinks we?re going somewhere, let?s pack some bags!?
• ?Grandmom may not know what?s going on, but she will always feel our kindness and love.?
• ?Even though Grammy doesn?t remember us, we can still remember her. She needs us to help her through this terrible disease.?

Your children may not just feel confused, sad or scared about the changes in their beloved grandparent?s personality and behavior, but they may also react to the amount of time you?re spending with the person with Alzheimer?s or changes that have taken place in your household to accommodate that person. Encourage your children to discuss what they?re feeling and talk frequently about what?s going on so they can understand and feel involved.

You can also encourage your kids to do a little exploring online to learn more about Alzheimer?s disease or other dementias on their own. The?Just for Kids and Teens section of the Alzheimer?s Association website is a great place to start.

Success In Writing, Publishing And Marketing With Jane Friedman ...

There are a number of key influencers in the publishing blogosphere, and Jane Friedman is definitely one of them.

I have been reading Jane?s articles and following her tweets since I started blogging myself, and she continues to give fresh perspectives that help authors as well as others in the industry. So I am excited to bring you this interview with her. Audio, video and text is below.

In the introduction to the podcast, I mention what I have been up to: the release of the ProWriter courses with NY Times bestselling author CJ Lyons, speaking at a publishing conference, how my business model is becoming a reality and my progress on Exodus, Hunterian and rewrites of my career change book. I?m also off down under next week to Australia and New Zealand. Ok, on with the show!

Jane Friedman is a former publishing and media exec who now serves as Assistant Professor of e-media at the University of Cincinnati. Jane is also Contributing Editor at Writer?s Digest and speaks on writing, publishing and new media seemingly everywhere.

• How Jane?s career started with a degree in Creative Writing and then moved into corporate publishing at F&W Media where she spent 12 years. She was publisher of Writer?s Digest so was writing and publishing about writing and publishing! She also specialized in learning about the trends in self-publishing so has been aware of the market for the last 10 years and how things have changed.

• Changes in ebook world. The exponential growth of ebooks in traditional and independent channels. The growth is a lot slower elsewhere but in the US, the growth is huge. At some publishers it is above 20% now. The other component is not just ebook sales, but online purchasing of print or electronic which is what impacts the brick & mortar stores. This trend will change book buying. There are also a lot of new tools available. Jane mentions Pressbooks which makes it easy to create professional ePub files. Vook which may be a competitor to iBooksAuthor ? multimedia ebooks with very little training.

• On the importance of print. My own opinion. Jane talks about print on demand for those indie authors whose customers demand some kind of print. The more interesting side are the special print editions that are a luxury product for fans. This is high quality, hardcover, special edition that is customized or personalized. I mention Cory Doctorow?s special hardbacks priced at $275.

• What?s broken with traditional publishing and are they changing? The print/return model to bookstores and the lack of transparency in reporting. Big publishing is responding to these issues but slowly and only when it benefits them. Simon & Schuster have introduced a more accurate reporting platform for their authors. But publishers are not feeling the financial pain of the existing model. Advances, royalties, return model still make them money. Jane mentions Mike Shatzkin?s site which is a great site for publishing news.

• On discoverability and platform. The importance of meta-data, making sure all the fields are completed and accurately tagged and categorized so that your book comes up in search. Being algorithm friendly is important. Creative marketing online is another aspect and this is a combination of your own story, your own strengths and also your target audience. There is a sweet spot for everyone. Look at who you want to attract which will drive your strategy. It does need to grow organically and not just be ?me too? marketing. Jane has a great article on author platform here.

• On author platform and then the breakout novels that aren?t related to the size of a platform. This is out of our control ? is it just luck? It?s hard to break down the breakout novels that do crest on media mentions, serendipity and other factors we can?t control. There is magic but we can only be prepared by putting in the effort to try to kickstart the process. People are impatient. People put in a few weeks of effort and then wonder why they aren?t a bestseller yet. Set tasks that you can sustain for months and then adjust as you understand what people respond to. It?s a continuous journey and if you?re new to marketing, there is a lot to learn. The ?overnight? success often comes from years of persistence.

• Jane wrote a tongue-in-cheek book on The Future of Publishing, which I recommend. She says ?You can?t be just a writer of stories and books anymore?, and this is true depending on your priorities. Jane mentions the Seth Godin comment that writers shouldn?t expect to make money anymore. The old attitudes don?t cut it in this new world.

• On introverts and marketing. Jane and I are both introverts. Before social networking, marketing was foreign. But the new ways allow us to connect in non-threatening ways that allow us to be authentic and real. This is life-changing! It?s not about a pushy, fake persona in marketing. It?s about being you and this is sustainable over the long term.

• On twitter. Jane has over 150,000 followers. Jane was an early adopter but didn?t understand it initially and so abandoned it. Once she had figured it out, she loved it and used it strategically. Her early start was part of the growth of her account. She was one of the first people in writing and publishing tweeting useful links and has stuck to this strategy. She tweets 3-6 times per day and doesn?t use it very conversationally. Twitter has had an amazing impact. Jane explains some of the opportunities that have come her way through the connections she?s made online. [I second this - Twitter, along with blogging, has changed my life.] Social media opportunities also snowball over time. It doesn?t happen immediately. Have patience. Be authentic. Enjoy the process.

The team of eight students elected a pair of project managers to lead the interaction with their counterparts at NASA, and they all research and test their ideas around the clock.

"In our five-story building, they mocked up what it would be like to control a robot on the first floor, putting obstacles in the way of the robot, and on another floor they simulated trying to communicate to the robot," Bolick noted as an example

Bualat, the NASA team lead, said the space agency intends use as much of the student's work as possible when astronauts on the International Space Station remotely operate a K10 mobile robot on Earth to layout a simulated radio telescope in a test next year.

This is part of a larger project, she added, to put a radio telescope on the far side of the moon using robots controlled by astronauts in a spaceship.?

"The moon is blocking all the radio noise that is coming from all of our radio signals on Earth. So we can look at origins of the Universe from the far side of the moon," Bualat explained.

Bolick said the hands-on experience will prepare his students for real-world careers.

"I'd like to think that by the time this is over, we have two very happy camps and some solid deliverables to hand over and that these students are ready for an actual job, not just with NASA but anyone."
