(AP) ? Phil Mickelson wants to be more than just a fan of the San Diego Padres. He wants to help buy the team.

Mickelson said Monday he has a joined one of the five groups trying to buy the team from John Moores, the Padres' majority owner for the last 18 years. Mickelson is part of the group that includes four grandchildren of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley ? Kevin and Brian O'Malley, and their cousins Peter and Tom Seidler, the chief executive of Class A Visalia Rawhide.

"I've been talking to them about being involved with them, having an opportunity to invest in the team and being part of the ownership group," Mickelson said. "I think it's a very good investment opportunity. More than that, it's opportunity to be involved in the community in San Diego, with something that gives the community a sense of pride. I feel like we can make the Padres a competitive team that can contend year in and year out, and we can do something for the community.

"It's something I've loved since I was a kid."

The San Diego Union-Tribune first reported the involvement of Mickelson, a four-time major champion who was inducted this month into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Mickelson brings the O'Malley clan a local investor and of San Diego's greatest athletes.

San Diego's biggest baseball star ? another lefty ? is involved in another group trying to buy the Padres. Tony Gwynn said last week he is joining the bid led by Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary Entertainment.

"When we met with Phil we were inspired by his commitment to San Diego and his passion for the Padres," Kevin O'Malley said in a statement to the Union-Tribune. "He is a world-class person, athlete and businessman with a strong history of charitable leadership and he will be an ideal partner for many years in San Diego."

Mickelson said he was asked to get involved in an ownership bid three years ago, but didn't feel it was a good fit.

"I think the O'Malley and Seidler family is the right group," he said. "They want to enhance the community tie, and that's something I've wanted to be part of, as well. The tie between the community and the team has not been as strong as it has been in the past. I think there are some things where we can increase that relationship, the emotional tie with the community and the players."

Moores' proposed sale of the team to Jeff Moorad collapsed in March after baseball owners refused to approve Moorad as controlling owner. Moorad headed a group that in March 2009 agreed to a gradual takeover of the Padres. At the time, the deal was estimated to be worth around $500 million.

The Padres could be worth a few hundred million more this time, in light of the Dodgers being sold for a record $2 billion and the Padres' new TV deal with Fox.

Moores owns 51 percent while Moorad's group owns 49 percent.

Asked about his proposed investment, Mickelson said only that it would be "a lot," and that it would be a "significant investment opportunity."

As for his role?

"Day-to-day operations, running a sports organization, that's not my forte," Mickelson said. "I want to have a personal relationship with the players and find ways to get them tied to the community, things of that nature."

Randy Ford Author- Revised INFLATION, DEFLATION, WAR! 57th Installment

Pauline, we know, came from an aristocratic family. They were obsessed with money, so they constantly worried about inflation and deflation, or any fluctuation of their currency. They talked about it all the time, and they lived accordingly. They had faced disaster before and saw it coming before most people did. So they hedged their bets with gold and silver, which they hid in Switzerland. The idea was that if and when the currency became worthless (and even if the banks collapsed) they?d have a cushion, or something ?real? that they could rely on. Though they couldn?t prepare for every contingency, they were more prepared than most people. Sometimes they seemed overcautious to Pauline. But what they really wanted was to buy insurance, when there was no such thing. Having experienced the world war and its aftermath, they should?ve known it. At the same time they were far-sighted and kept a step ahead everyone.

Fritz could?ve easily remained a casualty of war, but instead he returned to his position as a clerk of the court. He liked law, though he didn?t have the gumption to become an attorney so he never became a judge. Still he lived with a great deal of pain, and that was because he came home from war to an unfaithful wife. And it seemed to him like everyone knew it since she hadn?t kept it a secret from him. At the same time Fritz, who was not rich like his in-laws, couldn?t support a mistress. That was why he fooled around with Eva, his sons? nanny, who incidentally was a Jew, and he did this in spite of the strong anti-Semitic sentiment that was brewing around him. It was the beginning of the end for Austrian Jews, and Fritz would be among the first to know it. The beginning of the end for Eva too (as well as any hope of her ever becoming anything other than a servant), and Fritz would know that too. But he refused to admit it. He refused because he loved her, loved a Jew, just as he loved his wife who along with her parents were converted Jews. While people often said, ?Once a Jew, always a Jew? and made scapegoats out of them, particularly if they were rich. Fritz actually rarely thought about it. He also never considered the women in his life to be whores. This broad-mindedness (perhaps partially because he didn?t know the extent of his wife?s waywardness) came from Pauline herself. Some of it rubbed off on him because he secretly admired her openness; it was something that he made himself admire.

He couldn?t help but be influenced by many of the ideas about women that were floating around then?how he considered it normal for women to act and look like whores and then blame them if they got raped. He also found it exciting (though he knew nothing about his wife and Herr Lippert) that both he and Pauline were having affairs, so he never made a scene. Remember they were adults living in age when little girls were taught to exaggerate their ?sex appeal? long before they reached puberty, and sex seemed to be on everyone?s mind.

Eva, whenever she wanted to, could turn herself into Fritz?s little whore. She was petite, full-breasted (she would?ve describe it as heavy-breasted) and didn?t need the surgical enhancements that so many women then deemed necessary. She was not deformed or disabled in anyway and looked attractive and could?ve easily turned sex into a commodity, which she thought she hadn?t because she believed that she and Fritz weren?t breaking any rules. They certainly knew what they were doing and knew where each other stood, and it helped that they knew that Pauline didn?t care. At least at first she didn?t. But the fact was that times were changing. For one thing, after the civil war the Christian Democrats came into power and the National Socialist were making noises. The Nazis had begun beating up people and marching marched around with noticeable arrogance. Among other things that distinguished them was that members of the Nazi party were handpicked and had to be ?racially pure.? But no one then predicted that within a few years that they would be in control of the country. Fritz then would say, to no one in particular, ?Things were worse before, and they couldn?t gotten much worse,? and Eva and his wife often looked the other way, and if Fritz had looked closely he would?ve seen expressions of grief on their faces. But before then and even during the Great Depression, when things did get far worse, male dominance was abetted by a moral double standard: Pauline and Eva were denigrating themselves, while men were rarely criticized for having affairs or keeping mistresses. Sometimes Fritz saw how his wife seemed melancholy, yet he couldn?t see how he could help her and perhaps knew that they had gone too far to start over. Still he gave her every opportunity to talk about it. They were sensitive to each other in this regard, but found that they really didn?t have anything to say to each other, and maybe they realized that real communication needed to be an exchange.

Pauline and Fritz would?ve had basically the same upbringing. And, since no one can really see him or herself, they both relied on cues and perhaps knew each other too well?just as Frederic and Herr Lippert wouldn?t have been surprised by anything the other did.

Facebook options debut a wild card for volatility

(Reuters) - Investors can hope the debut of options on Facebook Inc goes more smoothly than the long-awaited debut of the social networking service's stock on May 18.

While the stock's puts and calls are expected to be popular, the big wild card is volatility and ultimately, the options price.

Traders will get a fresh start on options on the Internet giant when the contracts are offered on U.S. options exchanges on May 29. BATS Options exchange, a division of BATS Global Markets, will list the options on May 30, following its standard practice of listing new options a day later than the other exchanges.

Plenty of uncertainty surrounds the stock, which debuted to much fanfare at $38 and immediately ran into problems.

Facebook's first day of trading was marred by technological glitches, and the company faces criticism that it sold too many shares, overwhelming demand. A week later, the stock was at $31.47, down 17.2 percent.

Options volume is expected to be robust. "It's a cocktail party stock and probably will attract a lot of participation from retail traders," said Steve Place, a founder of options analytics firm investingwithoptions in Mobile, Alabama.

The stock's valuation remains high - the forward price-to-earnings ratio is at about 56, and the stock is expected to stay volatile. Premiums - the price paid for options - must reflect that uncertainty and will be even more difficult to pin down.

"The real issue like everything else in the market is about value, and with Facebook, we simply don't know what their true earnings power is at this moment," said Jeff McAllister, vice president of education at options education website optionsanimal.com in Lehi, Utah.

"The first day of trading is going to be completely speculative to begin with and it will be aggressive - flooded with day-traders trying to make a quick turn in the market. But institutions are expected to be on the sidelines waiting patiently as disciplined traders do."

The options debut will offer opportunities to hedge against or take advantage of volatility in the shares through strategies combining stocks and options.

"From LinkedIn to Zynga to Pandora and now Facebook, the evidence is clear that the one certainty for investors is share prices of social media companies are volatile and will likely remain so," said Gareth Feighery, a founder of options education firm MarketTamer.com in Philadelphia.

PRICING RISK AN UNKNOWN UNTIL TRADING OPENS

Before the IPO, investors had an anchor on what to expect regarding the share price. But in the options market there is no indication of what the demand will be.

So implied volatility, a key component of an options price, which measures the market's perceived risk of future share price movement, remains an uncertainty until the first transactions.

"Figuring out the implied volatility is a chicken-and-egg scenario - that value won't be known until the market opens up, when market makers will gauge the supply and demand to price risk," Place said.

If there is significant demand for options, either through speculators or hedgers, the implied volatility will be elevated, and the price of the option will rise.

Place looked at the implied volatility readings of LinkedIn, Groupon, Pandora, Zynga, Yelp and Zillow from the day their options opened on each of these stocks as well as the stock and options volume.

"Using these past values as a guide, we can expect Facebook options to have a 30-day implied volatility between 65-85 percent," he said. "The mid 70s would be a good estimate."

Facebook is currently valued at about $87 billion, based on a share price on Thursday of $31.88. Shares of the much-anticipated initial public offering have fallen sharply since they opened at $42.05 on May 18.

The company went public at a valuation that built in no margin for error, Feighery said.

GRAB A BOX OF POPCORN AND WATCH VOLUME

Almost 23,000 contracts traded for the first day of LinkedIn, equivalent to 1.3 times the stock volume for that day, according to options analytics firm Trade Alert.

Applying that same multiple for Facebook and assuming it mellows out at 60 million shares per day would equate to almost 800,000 option contracts, said Trade Alert President Henry Schwartz. That may be unlikely since that would exceed the average daily option volume of Apple Inc of about 750,000 contracts.

"We could easily see a couple hundred thousand contracts trading for Facebook options simply because the underlying share volume is so strong and there is so much hype about the IPO," Schwartz said.

Options clearinghouse OCC has designated NYSE Amex Options, owned by exchange operator NYSE Euronext, to be the primary market for Facebook options. Initial strike prices below and above the share price are from $16 to $49, in $1 increments.

Researchers at the University of Bonn film in real time as messenger RNA leaves the cell nucleus

The blueprint of all living beings is stored in their genetic material. In higher organisms this is stored in the well-protected cell nucleus. "Here a kind of copier works around the clock to make copies of the information needed at the time," says first author Jan Peter Siebrasse from the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Bonn. The copies contain the information which the cells need to produce vital enzymes or other cell building materials. These copies consist of messenger RNA which travels on random paths to the membrane of the cell nucleus and from there through the nuclear pores into the cytoplasm which fills out the cells like jello.

Stringent quality control at the pore

The working group has found out that the messenger RNA lingers briefly at the pores in the membrane of the nucleus before it is finally transported out presumably for a final "quality control" or simply because it has to adjust in order to leave via the pore exit. The export process lasts in total only a few hundredths of a second to several seconds. "In all likelihood, the process needs much longer for larger, voluminous messenger RNA molecules than for smaller ones," adds Prof. Ulrich Kubitscheck, head of the working group Biophysical Chemistry and senior author of the publication.

Interestingly enough, only about every fourth collision between arriving messenger RNA and the cell nucleus leads to a successful export. Here, two kinds of processes can be distinguished: On the one hand, brief collisions with the nuclear membrane where presumably no pore is hit, and, on the other hand, those transports that are slowly aborted perhaps on account of a deficient quality control.

RNA is packed in a suitcase made of "protein"

The RNA is packed in a type of "suitcase" made of proteins for transporting. "And it is quite a chunk," grins Prof. Kubitscheck. This is why some of his colleagues presume there are helpers on the outside of the cell's nucleus which pull the "suitcase" through the pores, a theory which the professional physicist together with the molecular biologist Jan Peter Siebrasse are currently investigating

Just what exactly happens en route from the copier to the pores has been clarified in recent years among others by Prof. Kubitscheck's working group at the University of Bonn. "Key experiments on this were undertaken by the biologist Dr. Roman Veith, whose doctorate thesis was awarded this year's Dr. Edmund ter Meer Ph.D. thesis prize from the university society," reports Prof. Kubitscheck. For these experiments the messenger RNA was altered so that it glowed when illuminated with a laser beam. This enabled the researchers to trace the path of individual molecules containing copies of the genetic material in living buccal gland cells of a mosquito type with up to 500 pictures per second. A light microscope with a high speed camera made the observation possible.

Researchers constructed special light microscope

Once the transport processes between the "copier" and the cell nuclear membrane were understood, Prof. Kubitscheck and his colleagues turned their attention in recent years to the direct transport process through the nuclear pores. In order to observe this process, they took a number of years to construct a highly sensitive light microscope which works on the basis of target illumination. It creates delicate pictures of living samples and, in the process of taking pictures with high frequency, creates an unusually strong contrast.

Process is of fundamental biological interest

The question of how the messenger RNA enters the cell from the cell nucleus is of fundamental interest in biology, a fact Prof. Thoru Pederson (University of Massachusetts Medical School) underscores in his comment which accompanies the article paper presented by the Bonn-based scientists. In recent years, there have been two publications on this performed by working groups in the USA and Israel. In these studies, however, the messenger RNA has been altered with additives making the molecules at least double their volume. By contrast, the Bonn-based working group modified the messenger RNA in a negligible way, as Prof. Pederson determined.

Richmond, Indiana, to be exact.

Located on the edge of the Ohio and Indiana state line, about an hour's drive from Indianapolis, Richmond is the home of the aptly-titled Richmond Red Devils. The community houses less than forty thousand people; a little over fifteen hundred high school students. Despite the fever and the hype that the adults and administration try and keep up, Richmond isn't what it used to be... and neither is it's high school.

The drop-out rate is staggering, teen pregnancy is at an all-time high, and the high school sports are barely surviving as enrollment drops. The Tiernan Center fills every chilly winter Friday for basketball, and McBride Stadium fills for baseball... and Lybolt Field continues to house more empty seats than not during it's Friday night lights.

The football head coach's contract expires and he, like many people in Richmond, leaves without giving it a second chance, and leaving a team of disheartened teenage boys in his wake for a bigger city. Jared Walton steps in and hopes to change everything about the Richmond High School football program. If anything could bring Richmond back into the twenty first century - and put the town's name back into the papers - it's the reputation he's going make for the high school's football team.

Mold Can Affect Your Home and Family - Robinson Construction

Mold comes in various forms, but can be broken down into three main categories. Know what kind of mold may be present in your home.

In any situation of water damage, you will no doubt be informed that mold is the single most typical byproduct. normally appearing within a couple of days of a water damage event, mold is also completely capable of increasing anywhere there is sufficient moisture to maintain it. Even abnormally higher humidity levels within a household may possibly offer the best setting for a mold development to establish itself.

The power of mold cannot be underestimated, either. when it has appeared, it spreads swiftly and can prove itself to be almost Impossible to effectively remediate. Mold can result in any and all varieties of health troubles from the slight to the serious, with exposure to large concentrations of mold spores being responsible for cases of lung disease and more serious respiratory troubles.

Mold also breaks down the surface on which it grows, so a large enough take over may truly compromise the structural integrity of your property. houses, enterprises, and even complete city blocks have been condemned and torn down, for no other reason than out of management mold growth. To say that mold is a trouble would be an understatement at very best.

Scientists do not know exactly how many types of mold are located in the world, but a conservative appraisal would put the number somewhere in the thousands. Nevertheless, mold is generally broken down into three fundamental categories.

Allergenic. This is the most frequent variety of mold, typically found in nature; it serves to break down dead organic materials from plants and animals. Allergenic molds typically do not bring about critical health complications beyond the occasional runny nose or skin irritation, but they can bring about structural harm to your property.?

Pathogenic. This form of mold is a bit more critical, in particular for those with compromised immune systems. bear in mind that the danger from mold comes when the spores are encountered and inhaled in high enough concentrations. People who are already at risk due to a weakened immune system should get rid of themselves from any chance of exposure to pathogenic mold.

Toxigenic. Also known as toxic mold, this is the stuff people most often discuss about. Referred to in the vernacular as ?black mold?, toxigenic molds may actually be deadly if the exposure level is prolonged enough or the concentrations large enough. Toxigenic molds include mycotoxins, poisonous spores which are easily inhaled and then go to perform on the person?s system. It is strongly encouraged that homeowners refrain from trying to handle toxic mold on their very own and bring in a professional mold remediation service.

Sadly, too many people mistakenly feel that removing the mold or killing the mold will solve their mold difficulty. Sadly this is not true. bear in mind that mold developed in this place in the first place due to the fact the environment was favorable to it, with ample humidity or moisture to make the ?development? probable. If the mold is ?eliminated but the environment is not properly handled, the mold growth will return. Steps must be taken to ?wash , sanitize, and treat the affected area totally, and most ?important , ?lowering the humidity levels down ?less than 50%. Only ?with ?these actions can the mold be more or less guaranteed not to return .? ?

King: Woman on diverted plane not on watchlists

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A US Airways passenger whose claim to have a surgically implanted device led to the diversion of a cross-Atlantic jet is not listed on terrorist watchlists or law enforcement databases, according to a congressman briefed on the incident.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, said Wednesday that the woman, whose identity has not been released, has been "checked through all of the databases" and "her name has not shown up anywhere."

On Tuesday, the Boeing 767 from Paris to Charlotte, N.C., was diverted to Bangor, Maine after the woman had handed a note to a flight attendant saying she had a surgically implanted device. U.S. authorities warned airlines last summer that terrorists might surgically hide bombs inside humans to evade airport security. King told CNN the woman did not have such a device.

He said that while terror groups like the al-Qaida branch in Yemen had probably not yet conducted any "test runs" of airline passengers implanted with bombs, "we do believe they have the capacity to do it." He said such a bomb would be able to bring down a plane.

At the same time, King said, a person with such an implant would probably display some signs, such as being stooped over or appearing to be in pain or discomfort, which might alert authorities.

Dissolving blood clots and other health facts - Alternative-medicine ...

A new approach to generating terahertz radiation will lead to new imaging and sensing applications. The low energy of the radiation means that it can pass through materials that are otherwise opaque, opening up uses in imaging and sensing -- for example, in new security scanners. In practice, however, applications have been difficult to implement.

With more than 15 million endoscope procedures done on patients each year in the U.S. alone, scientists have reported evidence that a new version of these flexible instruments for diagnosing and treating disease shows promise for helping surgeons more completely remove cancerous tumors. Their report on technology that combines the endoscope with the phenomenon responsible for the eerie blue glow in the cooling water of nuclear reactors was part of the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

New research from the University of Calgary's Hotchkiss Brain Institute shows that by using a CT scan (computerized tomography), doctors can predict which patients are at risk of continued bleeding in the brain after a stroke.

This vital information will allow doctors to utilize the most powerful blood clotting medications for those with the highest risk.

Dissolving blood clots by administering the drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) appears to improve outcomes in some patients with stroke, according to background information in the article. However, the medication is associated with a 10-fold increased risk of symptomatic brain hemorrhage (bleeding). Antiplatelet medications, such as aspirin, might further increase the risk for bleeding because these drugs impair the function of cells critical in forming blood clots.

Maarten Uyttenboogaart, M.D., and colleagues at the Medical Staffing Network University of Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands, studied 301 patients who received tPA following stroke between 2002 and 2006. Of those, 89 had used antiplatelet drugs prior to receiving tPA.

Whooping cough

Last reviewed: August 2, 2011.

Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable, violent coughing.?The coughing can?make it hard to breathe.? A deep "whooping" sound?is often heard?when the patient?tries to?take a breath.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is an upper respiratory infection caused by the Bordetella pertussis or Bordetella parapertussis bacteria. It is a serious disease that can cause permanent disability in infants, and even death.

When an infected person sneezes or coughs, tiny droplets containing the bacteria move through the air, and the disease is easily spread from person to person.

The infection usually lasts 6 weeks.

Whooping cough can affect people of any age. Before vaccines were widely available, the disease was most common in infants and young children. Now that most children are immunized before entering school, the higher percentage of cases is seen among adolescents and adults.

Symptoms

Initial symptoms, similar to the common cold, usually develop about a week after exposure to the bacteria.

Severe episodes of coughing start about 10 to 12 days later. In children, the coughing often ends with a "whoop" noise. The sound is produced when the patient tries to take a breath. The whoop noise is rare in patients under 6 months of age and in adults.

Coughing spells may lead to vomiting or a short loss of consciousness. Pertussis should always be considered when vomiting occurs with coughing. In infants, choking spells are common.

Other pertussis symptoms include:

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: No Wedding Date Set

Brad Pitt famously proclaimed he wouldn't get married again until all couples have a legal right to do so, and despite his recent engagement to Angelina Jolie, it looks like that long-held position is still weighing on his consciousness.

He's certainly not in any hurry to get to the altar.

"We actually, really and truly, have no date," Pitt said at a press conference for Killing Them Softly during the Cannes Film Festival Tuesday.

Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt Picture

"It's just something that makes sense to us, and date-wise, it's just a rumor. We're still hoping that we can figure out marriage equality before that date."

Which isn't to say Brad Pitt's proposal was any less magical.

"Angelina cried and smiled," a source said of the moment. "And everyone hugged once she put it on. She went around and showed it to each of the kids."

Though Pitt and his bride-to-be typically attend the Cannes Film Festival together, Jolie was noticeably M.I.A. at the famed gathering this year.

"She's actually not here right now. She's prepping for a movie she starts very soon," Pitt explained of Angie's latest project, Maleficent.

VoIP Phone Service Providers, Giving You Great Value for Your Money

The telephone is considered as the primary tool used for communication. Almost every homes and businesses in the United States has a telephone installed. The convenience it offers is unsurpassed and many people consider it as one of the most important piece of technology ever invented by man. Besides, with a phone, you will be able to constantly keep in touch with your family and friends at a much efficient and faster way.

Another tool used for communication is the internet. Like the telephone, this is also considered as a breakthrough in communications technology. The internet allows people to communicate freely through emails and instant messenger programs. Another great thing about the internet is you will be able to share your digital files from your computer to another user.

The internet today is also used for other purposes. Your kids can use it to research for their term papers, you can use it to purchase products and services and you can even use it for entertainment by playing online games, listen to streaming music or watch streaming videos.

However, the primary use for the internet is for communication.

Today, another kind of technology is available in the market. This too is considered as a breakthrough in the communications technology. In fact, with all the benefits it can offer, many people are now subscribing to this service and are canceling their subscription on their conventional landline phones.

This communication tool is called VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol or sometimes referred to as internet voice. Many people ask why more and more people are now subscribing from VoIP service providers for this service and are getting rid of their conventional landline phones. Some even asked what is so special about VoIP.

First of all, VoIP is very much like your conventional telephone. However, VoIP uses the internet to transmit and receive audio data. Also, your voice is converted to digital audio data. What this means for you is that it will enable you to transmit and receive digital audio data at a much faster rate with clearer quality.

The fact that VoIP uses the internet to transmit digital data, long distance and overseas call is much cheaper than conventional landline phones. Imagine calling overseas using a conventional landline phone, you will see that a simple 5-minute call can cost a lot of money. With VoIP, calling the same destination at the same duration, you will see that it only cost a fraction of what landline phones will charge you. Some VoIP providers offer free long distance and overseas call.

Another great benefit that VoIP can offer you is that it will throw in extra phone features, such as three-way calling, caller ID, audio conferencing, video conferencing, call waiting, return call and other features as standard. In conventional landline phones, you will see that each of these features are considered as extra feature and they will charge extra monthly fees for using a specific service. With VoIP, all these features are free.

So, if you are interested in getting VoIP installed in your home, you should consider getting in touch with your nearest VoIP service provider. As you will notice, there are quite a number of VoIP service providers out in the market today offering their services and claiming to be the best.

However, you can never really be sure if a particular VoIP service provider is really capable of providing great quality service unless you try out their services.

This is why many VoIP service providers today are now offering a trial period, usually 30 days, for clients to test the quality of their services. If you are not satisfied with their services, you can simply inform your service provider that you are no longer interested in using their services. If you do this within the trial period, you will be refunded.

Look for a VoIP service provider that is able to offer maximum benefits for their clients. Some VoIP service providers also offer free ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter), free or low cost IP phones and other great offers.

It is recommended that you should apply for a service provider that is already trusted by the community and offers a broad range of great incentives for their clients, such as free long distance calls, unlimited calls to specific countries and other things like that.

By getting the best VoIP service provider, you can be sure that you can definitely benefit a lot and get great value for your money.

Michael Pachter: Video Game Industry Would 'Disintegrate' if ...

In the latest episode of GameTrailers' Pach Attack, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter talks about used games and why they are an integral part of the video game ecosystem. In fact, he claims, the industry would be in serious trouble without them.

"I think the industry will disintegrate; I think there will be no more video games if next-gen consoles don?t support used games. You hear that, Sony and Microsoft? You have to support used games," he said during the show.

?Why would the next-gen consoles not support used games? Sony doesn?t sell that much software; maybe 10% of sales are Sony products. Everything else, the other 90%, is third-party. Sony isn?t going to help its overall sales that much ? let?s go with 1%, 2%,? he added.

You can watch the video to your left. His point is that the impact of trade-ins during most games' 90 day sweet spot for sales is being overblown and that console makers will not block used games.

USC Dornsife Scientific Diving: The Navy Dive Tables

By Kaitlin Mogentale

If you asked me what my greatest fear is while scuba diving, I wouldn?t hesitate with my answer? the bends. The bends, or decompression sickness (DCS), is a decompression illness arising from the dangers of breathing compressed air at depth for prolonged periods, coupled with improper decompression or excessively rapid ascents.

A photo of the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, where bent divers are sent for treatment (Photo by Kaitlin Mogentale).

A photo of the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, where bent divers are sent for treatment (Photo by Kaitlin Mogentale).

The most severe of symptoms are permanent CNS damage, and occasionally death. The dangers of improperly off-gassing after a dive have been (rightfully) drilled into my head during the prerequisite ENST-298 Introduction to Scientific Diving class.

In class we studied Haldane?s 1908 report on compressed-air illness to better understand decompression sickness. From Haldane?s research came an initial 2:1 rule. The rule states that so long as a diver remains within the ratio of 2:1 for the pressure at depth versus ambient pressure on ascent, he is safe to ascend without developing a case of DCS?although it is important to note that due to complex human physiology, there is no definitive point between avoiding and getting DCS.

Later extensive research at the U.S. Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) by Dwyer, Hawkins, Workman, Yarborough, and others from the 1930s-1960s arrived at more precise ratios using empirical data, focusing on the pressure of the inert gas in air directly involved in DCS, nitrogen. Workman?s model introduced M-Values (or greatest partial pressure of nitrogen a ?tissue? compartment can tolerate without the onset of DCS at a given absolute pressure) for each of 6 designated hypothetical tissue compartments with 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 80, and 120-minute nitrogen half-times. These 6 compartment half-times were calculated based on the capacity of the ?tissue? to store nitrogen gas, and the effectiveness of nitrogen transport to and from the tissue, such that:

Half-time= (1/c) x S/C, ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? (1)

where c is a constant of proportionality, C is equivalent to gas transport effectiveness, and S is the solubility coefficient for the gas in a tissue. A fast tissue with a short half-time corresponds to a well-perfused tissue, and perhaps lower fat content, as nitrogen is less soluble in aqueous tissues than in fatty tissues.

Haldane calculated the 5, 10, 20, 40, and 75 half-times used in his model based on their representation of what he theorized happens in the body. Haldane hypothesized men became fully saturated with nitrogen in 5 hours and that additional nitrogen loading after 4 half-times ?would scarcely be appreciable?. The final 75 minute ?tissue? compartment therefore corresponds to the fact that 4 x 75 minutes = 300 minutes, or 5 hours. The Navy Tables use Haldane?s calculations as the basis for their theoretical compartments, changing the 75-minute compartment to 80 minutes and adding a 120-minute compartment. The Navy assumed 6 half-times for saturation. The changes reflected problems associated with earlier US Navy tables that had used Haldane?s original five compartments in their calculation.

Workman?s M-values are based on a compartment?s nitrogen half-time and the pressure of the breathing gas, which is always dependent on depth. M-values are mathematically represented by the equation

M= Mo + ?Md,???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? (2)

where M is the nitrogen partial pressure limit for each compartment, Mo is the partial pressure of nitrogen tolerated at sea level, defined for each compartment, and ?Md is the increase of M with increasing depth, defined for each compartment, multiplied by the depth (in feet of sea water).

One simply divides the given compartment?s M-Value by the ambient pressure at sea-level to arrive at the permissible nitrogen pressure surfacing ratio, which is not constant across all compartments as Haldane assumed.

The studies done at NEDU over the decades discovered that faster compartments tolerate a much higher nitrogen pressure gradient than can the slower compartments. This difference can be accounted for in the greater solubility of nitrogen in slower tissues (or a low transport efficiency in those tissues), resulting in a greater molar concentration of nitrogen than the fast tissues. This is why model compartments representing slower tissues feature more conservative M-values and ratios than those representing faster tissues. Slower tissues ?hold onto? their nitrogen longer which places them at an increased risk for bubble formation. The M-values are called ?sliding scale M-values??each compartment has a distinct M-value at any given ambient pressure.

We will be focusing on no-decompression dives during the span of the ENST-480 course, so I will focus on using the Navy Dive Tables with no-decompression. M-values can be used to determine the maximum amount of bottom time that can be allotted at a certain depth without requiring decompression stops. For this type of calculation, the planned depth is converted to absolute pressure in feet seawater (fsw) and the partial pressure of nitrogen is calculated. If the M0-value for a compartment happens to be less than the absolute nitrogen pressure in fsw at that depth, the diver would use the following equation to determine the No-Decompression Limit (NDL on the Navy dive tables, or max bottom time without required decompression) for the dive:

t= [T/ln(2)] x ln[(P0-Pa)/(Pm-Pa)]???????????????????????????????????????????????? (3)

where t= a compartment?s maximum time at the planned depth, T= the half-life (in minutes) of the specific compartment, Po= initial nitrogen partial pressure in the compartment (at the surface at the start of the dive), Pa= ambient nitrogen pressure at the planned depth, and Pm= the M-value for the specific compartment allowed at the surface (or M0).

Once the NDL is calculated for each compartment, the one with the shortest time becomes the controlling compartment at that depth. The dive must not exceed the controlling compartment?s NDL at that depth to avoid required decompression stops. The Navy Tables round NDL?s down to the nearest 5 or 10 minutes, for easier memorization.

Pressure Groups and Repetitive Dives

After a dive, there is a certain amount of nitrogen left over in the various compartments (called residual nitrogen). With proper off-gassing, remnant nitrogen is not problematic to the surfaced diver. Residual nitrogen becomes important when a diver is conducting a repetitive dive.

Any dive completed within 12 hours of a previous dive is considered a repetitive dive. 12 hours has significance as the elapsed time before the slowest 120-min compartment is 98% de-saturated with excess nitrogen (the equivalent of 6 half-times). The Navy Tables use the 120-min compartment to track residual nitrogen. That is, the 120-min is the controlling compartment for determining the entering pressure group on a repetitive dive. Pressure groups are based on intervals of total air pressure in the controlling 120-min compartment. The total air pressure in the compartment is determined by

A(t)= Aa + (Aa ? A0)e-kt,????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? (4)

such that A(t)= total air pressure in the compartment, Aa= total ambient pressure, A0= initial load in the compartment. k is a constant determined by the half-life of the compartment, using the equation

k=ln(2)/T. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? (5)

In the case of the 120-min compartment, T would be 120, and k subsequently becomes 0.00578.

Using equation 4, the total air pressure in the 120-min compartment after a dive of given length and depth can be calculated. The pressure groups are designated by a letter, A-Z, and are identified by a range of total air pressure determined by the Navy. For example, the pressure group with the letter A corresponds to a range of total pressure in the 120-min compartment equivalent to 33-35 fsw. As the letters get closer to Z, the total pressure in the compartment gets higher. The entering pressure group for a repetitive dive determines the maximum bottom time for that repetitive dive, while taking into account the residual nitrogen time from previous dives.

Let?s use these equations to show standard dive table calculations:

A diver wants to complete a dive to 35 feet, without any required decompression. At 35 fsw, nitrogen partial pressure is 0.79 x (33+35)= 53.72 fsw. Compartments 5, 10, 20, and 40 can withstand pressure loading up to 104, 88, 72, and 58 fsw of nitrogen respectively (these are their M0-values). The 80-min and 120-min compartments have M-values less than 53.72, (52 and 51 fsw respectively) and therefore a diver can remain at that depth for only a limited amount of time until a decompression stop is required. Using equation 3, we can determine the maximum amount of time a diver can remain at that depth without required decompression for each of the 2 slow compartments.

t= [T/ln(2)] x ln[(Po-Pa)/(Pm-Pa)]

For the 80-min tissue compartment, t=320.8 minutes

For the 120-min tissue compartment, t=401.9 minutes.

In this case, the 80-min compartment is the controlling compartment. This means that the diver can stay at 35 feet for a max of 320.8 minutes without any required decompression (the US Navy Tables round this down to 310 minutes).

So let?s say our diver acquires a bottom time of 40 minutes at 35 feet.

Using depth equivalent pressures, A0= 33 fsw, k= ln(2)/120, Aa=33 fsw + the planned depth of 35 fsw=68, and t=40 minutes.

Crunching these numbers, we see that the diver exits the water with A(t)= 40 fsw, placing him or her in pressure group D. After some time on the surface (the diver?s surface interval time or SIT), the diver will continue to off-gas and can enter a repetitive dive at a pressure group lower than D. Using this information, a diver can determine the maximum NDL for the next dive using equation 3, incorporating the residual nitrogen into the initial nitrogen load.

The NAUI dive tables we use are much more conservative than the Navy Dive Tables but are largely based off of the Navy?s basic calculations and conclusions. It is important to understand the mathematics and science behind the Navy Tables in order to understand the NAUI tables.
