Timothy Geithner on the Fiscal Cliff: The Ball's in the GOP's Court

With the fiscal cliff looming and no deal to resolve it in sight, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner expressed confidence that a compromise could be reached during my interview with him on "This Week," but said the burden is now on Republicans to help find a solution to avoid a potential economic crisis.

"I actually think that we're gonna get there. I mean, you know, just inevitably gonna be a little political theater in this context," Geithner said, when asked whether Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell laughed after hearing President Obama's plan to avert the fiscal cliff. "Sometimes that's a sign of progress. Think we're actually making a little bit of progress, but we're still some distance apart."

Echoing widespread Republican rejection of the White House's proposal last week, House Speaker John Boehner said after meeting with Geithner that " the White House has to get serious."

"And at this point though - you gotta recognize that they're in a very difficult place. And they recognize they're gonna have to move on a bunch of things. But they don't know really how to do it yet. And how to get support from the - from the members on the Republican side," he said, adding later that the proverbial ball was "absolutely" in the GOP court. "And, you know, when they come back to us and say, 'We'd like you to consider this. And we'd like you to consider that,' we'll take a look at that."

Geithner - who met with top GOP leaders this week to present the White House's proposal to end the fiscal standoff - predicted support from "the business community" and "from the American people" for a deal approximating the one being offered, which reportedly includes tax hikes on the wealthy, cuts to Medicare and some stimulus spending.

However, if there is no agreement by the end of the year, the treasury secretary told me going over the cliff would be "very damaging."

"Look, there's a huge amount at stake here in this economy, George. And there's just no reason why 98 percent of Americans have to see their taxes go up because some members of Congress on the Republican side want to block tax rate increases for 2 percent of the wealthiest Americans. Remember, those tax rates, those tax cuts, cost a trillion dollars over 10 years," he said.

Geithner said the White House plan offered a "good mix" of increased taxes and spending cuts. He also added that Social Security reform would not be part of the discussion to resolve the fiscal cliff.

"We think we have a very good plan, a very good mix of tax reforms that raise a modest amount of revenue on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans, combined with very comprehensive, very well designed, very detailed savings that get us back to the point where our debt is stable and sustainable," he said. "We're prepared to, in a separate process, look at how to strengthen Social Security. But not as part of a process to reduce the other deficits the country faces," he said.

Finally, with Geithner wrapping up his time in the president's cabinet, I asked him if banking executive Jamie Dimon - who has billionaire Warren Buffett's endorsement - should be named the next treasury secretary, but Geithner declined to answer directly.

"George, the president's gonna choose somebody very talented to lead the Treasury for his next four years. And- I'm very fortunate I've been able to work with him to help solve these problems in the country over this period of time. And I'm very confident he's gonna have somebody in place- in January to succeed me," he said.

Explorers to retrace Shackleton's epic Antarctic journey

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A group of intrepid explorers are readying themselves for the first-ever recreation of the epic voyage made by British explorer Ernest Shackleton on his ill-fated attempt to reach the South Pole in 1914, on an exact copy of Shackleton's lifeboat.

Shackleton's boat, the Endurance, became trapped in the Antarctic ice and was eventually crushed and sank. His attempt to raise the alarm is considered by many to be one of the greatest journeys ever made.

Shackleton took a small party from his crew and rowed 1,287 km (800 miles) on the lifeboat James Caird from Elephant Island to South Georgia, where they knew they could get help from a whaling station. Their journey took from 1914 to 1916.

The British and Australian team, led by Australian explorer and environmentalist Tim Jarvis, will row the same route and then cross the mountainous, glacial interior of South Georgia to reach the north coast. They will use no equipment that was not available in Shackleton's time.

The Shackleton Epic team will depart from South America in early January, rowing an identical copy of Shackleton's 6.85 metre (22 feet 6 inches) lifeboat before climbing the mountains.

The journey will not be without danger. The replica boat, named the Alexandra Shackleton after the British explorer's granddaughter, has no keel and capsizes very easily.

"You know, we ran the numbers and said what can we do with an exact replica of Shackleton's boat, without cheating, to try and make this ... less susceptible to capsize than what he had," Jarvis said.

The team have practised capsizing the vessel and trying to right it again, and have attempted to use their supplies, equipment and rocks as ballast instead of just rocks as Shackleton did.

"We ran all the numbers, we fiddled around with rocks and our camera batteries because we are filming this ... and you know what? We came up with exactly the same configuration of how the ballast was loaded as what Shackleton did with rule of thumb," Jarvis said.

"It's amazing to think that (after) a hundred years, with all of our modern thinking, we've ended up with exactly what Shackleton had. But yeah, it's still a very tippy, very unsafe boat," he said.

Jarvis was toasted at a presentation in Sydney at the weekend with an identical whisky to that carried on board the original Endurance, served in tin mugs for added authenticity.

Jarvis, an environmental scientist and an experienced explorer, said he was inspired by Shackleton's leadership style and his ability to turn disaster into success.

He also said Shackleton's story was an ideal platform to promote his environmental message.

"Well, Shackleton was trying to save his men from the Antarctic and we're now trying to save Antarctica from man," Jarvis said.

Cuba prisoner: US should ink no-aggression pact

American contractor Alan Gross has been imprisoned for three years in Cuba for smuggling satellite equipment to the country's Jewish community. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

HAVANA, Cuba ? Three years after he was arrested in Havana, jailed American contractor Alan Gross is asking the U.S. government to sign a "non-belligerency pact" with Cuba as a first step toward negotiating his release, according to a Cuba policy analyst who just visited him.

Peter Kornbluh, a Cuba specialist at the National Security Archives, a nonprofit research center in Washington, met with Gross for four hours?on Wednesday at the military hospital in Havana where the contractor is being held. He said Gross appeared "extremely thin" ? he has lost over 100 pounds since his arrest ?and dispirited.

"He?s angry, he?s frustrated, he?s dejected ? and he wants his own government to step up" and negotiate, said Kornbluh. "His message is that the United States and Cuba have to sit down and have a dialogue without preconditions. ? He told me that the first meeting should result in a non-belligerency pact being signed between the United States and Cuba."

Gross' comments appear to represent a new tack in an aggressive public relations campaign to win his freedom. His supporters have planned a candlelight vigil outside the Cuban interests section in Washington D.C., on Sunday and the U.S. Senate is poised to take up a resolution Monday demanding his release, Gross? wife, Judy, has also become increasingly critical of the U.S. government for not doing more to demand that her 63-year-old husband be allowed to return home.

"He feels like a soldier in the field left to die," she said at a press conference in Washington last week.

Gross, who worked for an Agency for International Development contractor, was arrested by the Cubans on Dec. 3, 2009, and accused of smuggling sophisticated satellite and other telecommunications equipment into? the country to give to the island?s tiny Jewish community. Gross has said he was only trying to increase Internet access? in Cuba. But he was convicted by a Cuban court in March of last year for crimes "against the independence and territorial integrity of the state" and sentenced to 15 years.

Last month, Gross and his wife filed a $60 million lawsuit against the U.S. government and the contractor he was working for, Development Alternatives, charging he was used as a "pawn" in a U.S. government program to change the Castro regime and never advised about the dangers he faced bringing high tech satellite transmission equipment into Cuba. (The State Department, of which AID is a part and which has repeatedly called for Gross? release, declined comment. Development Alternatives has released a statement saying it has "no higher priority" than bringing Gross home.)?

Kornbluh, who has advocated closer U.S.-Cuba dialogue, was in Havana last week to attend a conference marking the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis. He was granted permission to visit Gross by Cuban officials. (The Cubans so far have denied all news media requests to meet with him.) He said Gross was most upset about being unable to return home to see members of his family who are ill, especially his 90-year-old mother in Texas who has cancer.

Ever since U.S.-backed Cuban President Fulgencio Batista was forced from power by rebels led by Fidel Castro in 1958, the relationship between the two nations has been fraught with difficulties.

"He really wants to see his mother, who is quite old and infirm,? said Kornbluh. When Kornbluh had his photo taken with Gross, the contractor held up a photo that read: ?Hi Mom.? When he asked Gross what he wanted to get out of the lawsuit, the contractor replied: ?I want to see my wife and I want to see my mother."

To accomplish that, Gross is seeking to nudge the Obama administration, according to Kornbluh. Gross knows that his freedom "is going to depend on his government negotiating in good faith with the Cubans," said Kornbluh. "His message to Barack Obama is: I?m fired up and ready to go. Where are you at this moment?"

* Please contribute ideas and help me brainstorm. If I feel like I'm carrying the whole plot, I will drop you like a bad habit.

* Do not power-play or use Mary Sues. Please also do not post just for one character. Since we'll be doubling, I will expect 99% of my rp partner's posts to involve all their characters.

* If you have other rps, please do me the courtesy of posting in order. If I give you a reply in the afternoon and your other rp partner gives you a reply later in the evening, please reply to me first. It's just more fair this way. "Al Qaeda-linked" Yemeni among four Pakistan drone strike dead

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A missile fired from a drone killed four people, including a Yemeni fighter linked to al-Qaeda, when it hit their car in northern Pakistan on Saturday evening, intelligence and tribal sources said.

The strike at Sheen Warsak village in South Waziristan followed another drone attack in the same area two days earlier.

A Yemeni fighter called Abdul Rehman, allied to al-Qaeda, was among the dead, government and intelligence sources said.

It is difficult for journalists to verify the casualties from drone strikes since the government forbids foreign journalists from travelling to the area without a military escort and the Taliban often seal off the sites of strikes.

Many Pakistanis say the strikes are a violation of national sovereignty and that civilian casualties encourage families seeking revenge to join the insurgency.

But the U.S. says civilian deaths are minimal and the drones operatr in areas outside of Pakistani government control.
