Oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, activates feelings of trust and attraction between people when it is released in the brain, and it rises in the early stages of romantic love. Yet it is not just a Cupid's arrow that spurs you to fall in love with the nearest person, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Neuroscience. Instead oxytocin's social magic depends on whether or not a person is in a monogamous relationship.

A team of researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany and elsewhere monitored a first encounter between straight male study participants and an attractive woman in a laboratory setting. When given oxytocin via an intranasal spray before the meeting, men who had indicated they were currently in a stable relationship kept a greater physical distance from the woman in the lab compared with single guys given oxytocin and with single and ?taken? guys given a placebo. Although they stayed only 10 to 15 centimeters farther away, the extra distance left the woman outside of what most people consider ?personal space,? a zone reserved for loved ones. Moreover, it was not because they did not find her attractive: the monogamous men who received oxytocin rated the woman just as good-looking as the other men did.

The results suggest that oxytocin has a role in maintaining relationships after they are sparked and add to growing evidence for differences in how the hormone acts to modulate social interactions?for example, promoting bonds with familiar people but provoking aggression with strangers. ?It's not all positive with oxytocin,? says Dirk Scheele, a psychologist involved with the study. ?And what you call prosocial or antisocial depends on your perspective.?

These Awesome Maps Show Off All the World's Geo-Tagged Tweets

There's only so many place you can tweet from, and Twitter's been diligently indexing them all. These new visualizations from the Twitter team show the history of all geo-tagged tweets since 2009 (when the feature was born) by location. We're talking billions of them.

We've seen this sort of thing before, whether it's Twitter and Flickr usage across the country illustrated by bursts of light, or Foursquare check-ins displayed the same way. And hopefully we'll never stop seeing them, because they're always awesome.

Looks like folks out west don't find much use in geo-tagging their tweets as "in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere" (I KID!) and if you're looking for a new place to tweet from on the isle of Manhattan, good luck; you'll need it. [Twitter Blog via The Verge]

91% Frances Ha

All Critics (80) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (7)

The dialogue and editing are zippy and generally charming, combining with the tart observations of 20-something culture to create a nice frisson.

A black-and-white salute to the French New Wave (the score is borrowed from Georges Delerue, composer of many a Truffaut and Godard film) that manages to be very much of this moment ...

The movie's a love letter to an actress and her character, but by the end you may feel like an intervention is more in order.

The obvious love of New York City echoes Woody Allen at his best. But "Frances Ha" is very much its own film, a story of life and love and messy rooms.

Baumbach ... makes the film a celebration of Gerwig's coltish, goofball appeal.

Late-blooming 20-somethings have never been so perfectly captured -- and Gerwig has never been more appealing -- than in this funny, tender, life-affirming movie.

Frances Ha is endearing, kind and, in many ways, Noah Baumbach's best movie to date.

It's a film that bears all of the zingy dialogue and sharp characterizations of Baumbach's other films ("The Squid and the Whale," "Greenberg") but with more of a generosity of spirit towards its characters.

Funny and touching, Frances Ha may very well be the most eloquent take yet on a generation in flux.

The light Frances Ha provides skittish moments of heartbreak and confusion on the humorous path to adulthood, but it sends a comforting message that our fate may use the same language as our dreams even if it doesn't tell the same story.

Easily Baumbach's warmest and most upbeat film to date.

Mostly the movie is the best showcase so far for Gerwig's brand of lovely klutziness (and)a contemporary everywoman appeal that's impossible to dismiss, making Frances' self-absorption easier to swallow and tasty, too.

One of the most appealing films of the year to date -- and it may well end up being the most appealing indie release of the entire year

This is a tough one, but I must recommend it, if you are at all inclined to witness creativity at its unconventional best.

"Frances Ha"? More like Frances Bah!

Gerwig dances the Millennial Limbo

...caters to the Gerwig persona while also sanding off the edges of Baumbach's usual bitterness.

"Frances Ha" is about the inevitability of adulthood; it can be postponed, but it can't be avoided.

[a] fresh-faced and spirited black and white comedy...

If Frances has a chance, there's hope for us all.

The near-incomparable Greta Gerwig gives Frances a fire, an exuberance, and a three-dimensional uniqueness that ensures the viewer never sways from her side.

It gives you two choices: find it delightful or don't: there is no unique, self-guided option. As frustrating as that conundrum may be, it's still hard not to take option one.

White House: Asteroid 'poses no threat' to Earth

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Have no fear: The White House says an asteroid more than 1 1/2 miles long poses no threat to planet Earth.

The big rock called Asteroid 1998 QE2 was making its closest approach to Earth on Friday, keeping a safe distance of 3.6 million miles, or 15 times the distance between Earth and the moon.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest was asked about the asteroid during a briefing. He says scientists have concluded the asteroid "poses no threat to planet Earth."

He added, to laughter, "I never really thought I'd be standing up here saying that."

The asteroid is believed to be about 1.7 miles long.

The White House was hosting a "We The Geeks" Google+ Hangout Friday, bringing together NASA's deputy administrator and scientists to talk about asteroids.

China president heads to Caribbean to talk trade

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) ? Chinese President Xi Jinping is shopping in the Caribbean for new sources of energy for his growing country.

President Xi arrived in the rain Friday for a state visit to the twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, a leading supplier of natural gas. The Chinese embassy says in a statement that Xi will seek to deepen trade and investment in energy when he meets with Trinidadian Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

He'll also attend a groundbreaking on Saturday for a hospital funded in part by China.

Trinidad has long been a major exporter of natural gas to the United States. But that has dropped as U.S. fuel production surges thanks to new exploration and drilling technology.

Xi is also visiting Costa Rica, Mexico and the U.S. on this trip.

EU agency calls for curbs on GSK, Valeant epilepsy drug

LONDON (Reuters) - Use of an epilepsy drug developed by GlaxoSmithKline and Valeant Pharmaceuticals should be restricted to patients for whom other anti-epileptic medicines have proved inadequate or not tolerated, EU regulators said on Friday.

The European Medicines Agency said the move followed cases of abnormal coloring of the skin, nails, lips and eye tissues, including the retina, in some patients who took Trobalt.

It recommended a comprehensive eye examination should be performed at the start of treatment and at least every six months during treatment. Among 55 patients receiving Trobalt in long-term studies examined so far, 15 had retinal pigmentation, the agency added.

Abnormal coloring of the retina can result in impaired vision.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a similar warning about the drug - which is sold in the United States as Potiga - last month.
