An Unhealthy Dose Of Bad Manners

I am a nurse in an intensive care unit in a large metropolitan hospital. Often we see people at their worst, and their relatives and friends too! It can be amazing how many ?friends? come out of the woodwork when someone is seriously ill in hospital. Often a patient will be unconscious or feel very tired and unwell, and may not be in a position to refuse visitors. For this reason we recommend that only close family and friends visit a person in the ICU.

However some people do not understand this and family often feel powerless to say no. I cared for a young girl ?B? who had a severe head injury following a high speed car vs truck accident. Her mother was killed, and her boyfriend severely injured as well. This event was on the radio and TV for several days, as the main highway was closed for hours following the crash.

B came from a complicated family, as her father had died and her mother remarried twice, and there were many family members to contend with. Her oldest brother was appointed as the ?family contact? as this makes our job easier, by speaking with just one rather than many people. On this day, there were lots of visitors again, about 3 days after the accident. Then 2 women came in to visit, apparently friends of B?s mother. They immediately began to fuss with sheets, try to comb B?s hair, wipe her face, etc., etc. This is not permitted in the ICU as B had a breathing tube in that could be dislodged, and many other tubes, as well as a large surgical wound on her head. I started to ask the women to just restrict themselves to holding B?s hand, when they whipped up the bed sheets to ?make her legs comfortable?. I was horrified, as they exposed B?s private parts and the curtains were wide open! I pulled the sheet back down firmly and asked them to leave it alone.

They stated that they worked in the nursing industry too ? as carers. This is quite different from an experienced ICU nurse! One of them held her hand up in front of my face to stop me stopping them. I tried to explain the risks of dislodging tubes, but they continued on. One demanded cream so that they could rub B?s pressure points (heels, elbows etc)! I had to say no, this action causes pressure sores, not prevents them! After all this, they left when other people wanted to come in. I asked the family that these women NOT be allowed back in as they weren?t family, thankfully B?s brother agreed!

I know their intentions were to be kind and caring, but they were dangerous and rude. Even when asked to stop, they saw themselves as in the right. ?Hospital etiquette? should be about loving your loved one, not taking over the hospitals job. 0809-12

How serendipitous this story was submitted at this time!?? A month or so ago my husband and I made a hasty trip to see a dear friend of mine who was in the ICU at a metropolitan hospital several states away from where we live.?? I experienced firsthand some bizarre behavior by others that had me horrified and furious.

Philippine forecasters protest, track new storm

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? As another storm threatened to cause more flooding, hundreds of Philippines' weather agency employees protested over their pay Tuesday and warned that forecasting services could deteriorate.

An alarmed President Benigno Aquino III rushed to assure the protesting employees that steps were being taken to resume payment of the cash benefits that had been suspended in March.

"I just reminded that since the weather is bad and we have a weather disturbance, we should not add to the worries of those who were hit by the floods," Aquino told reporters after a hasty meeting with the restive employees.

Forecasters and other employees of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration wore black arm bands and hoisted streamers urging the government to resume hazard pay and other allowances.

While the workers did not plan any work stoppage, protest leader Ramon Agustin said some hard-up employees have failed to report for work due to lack of money.

"The only reason why we remain strong in performing our tasks is our pure love for the country, but this would eventually weaken," Agustin said in a news conference at the weather agency, which buzzed with activity as forecasters tracked Tropical Storm Kai-Tak off the country's northeast.

The archipelago located in the tropical far western Pacific serves like a welcome mat for about 20 tropical storms and typhoons that develop in the open ocean and blow toward Asia every year. Heavy rain from those storms and the annual monsoon often cause flooding and landslides and leave a trail of death and destruction.

Relentless rains for nearly two weeks culminated in a two-day deluge last week that submerged the capital, Manila, and outlying farming provinces, leaving nearly 100 people dead and forcing more than 400,000 people to flee from homes.

Relief work and repairs to roads and homes are continuing in some coastal and riverside areas in Manila and nearby provinces that were flooded. Kai-Tak was expected to hit the northern tip of the main northern Luzon island before blowing toward southern China later this week.

The storm was also forecast to intensify monsoon rains that could soak Manila and northern provinces again.

"We assure the public that a walkout is farthest from our mind," said Agustin, who heads a 900-strong workers' group. "But our workers need to be rescued, too."

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said payment of the hazard pay and other cash benefits were suspended to correct past irregularities but added the workers would get back the benefits soon.

Agustin said the employees have lost an average of 10,000 pesos ($238) monthly since the benefits were suspended by officials in March.

Paul Ryan Chokes Up at Wisconsin Homecoming Rally

WAUKESHA, Wis. - For Paul Ryan, it was an emotional homecoming.

With thousands cheering him during his first stop in his native Wisconsin as a vice presidential candidate, Ryan seemed to be choking back tears as he relayed his affection for his home state.

"I'm fifth generation from this state. My families came here back in the 1800s, made a go of it. It's where we've all raised our families ever since. This is such a phenomenal place to live, to work, to raise your family," Ryan said, choking up as he spoke to the crowd of approximately 10,000.

Just two days after Ryan set off on that clandestine trip from his home in Janesville, Wis., to Norfolk, Va., to join the Republican ticket, Mitt Romney shared the emotion he and his wife, Ann, felt as they were welcomed by the crowd in Ryan's home state.

"Ann leaned over to me as Paul was speaking, we were all moved by the way at the welcome you gave him. We were touched and tears filled my eyes, I looked at Ann, tears were in her eyes, and I know Paul, Janna [Ryan's wife] felt the same way. You guys are just amazing. I'm not sure about the kids but the rest of us felt pretty emotional," Romney said.

"I guess you think I made the right decision, the right choice," Romney said. "I know I did. People ask me why I chose Paul Ryan. The answer is I wanted someone who was a leader. Leadership comes from character. This is a man who has real character, who loves America, who has passion for America. Who understands what it takes to get America on the right track and this leader is going to help get America strong."

Joined by his wife, daughter and two sons, Ryan, a fifth generation Wisconsinite who grew up and lives in Janesville, some 50 miles south of Waukesha, spoke in almost a Wisconsin code as he shared his affinity for the signature items of the Badger State - from their sports teams to their beer.

"My veins run with cheese, bratwurst, and a little Spotted Cow and some Miller," Ryan said to cheers from the crowd. "I was raised on the Packers, Badgers, Bucks and Brewers. I like to hunt here, I like to fish here, to snowmobile here. I even think ice fishing is interesting. I'm a Wisconsinite through and through and I've just got to tell you how this means to be home."

With Ryan at his side, Romney relayed a forceful message to President Obama about the state of his campaign, telling the president to "take your campaign out of the gutter."

"There's no question but if you follow the campaign of Barack Obama, he's going to do everything in his power to make this the lowest, meanest negative campaign in history. We're not going to let that happen. This is going to be a campaign about ideas about the future of America. This is a campaign about greatness, about America's future for your children, for the world. Mr. President take your campaign out of the gutter, let's talk about the real issues that America faces," Romney said.

Since Ryan joined the ticket Saturday, Romney's events have burst with crowds numbering into the thousands, and the campaign shot a television ad at Sunday night's Waukesha event, which the staff estimated near 10,000 people. A few protesters were escorted out of the event by security after interrupting Romney as he spoke.

The Wisconsin event marked the end of Romney and Ryan's two-day post-announcement tour. Romney will head on to Florida Monday and Ohio Tuesday to round out his four-day bus tour. Ryan flies to Iowa for an event Monday at the same time that President Obama will be on a bus tour of his own in the Hawkeye State.

IOC president closes "happy and glorious" Games

LONDON (Reuters) - The London Olympics were described as "happy and glorious" by International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge on Sunday as he officially closed the 30th Summer Games.

"These were happy and glorious Games," Rogge told cheering competitors and spectators packed into the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium in east London, in a clear reference to Britain's national anthem and Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.

"You have shown the world the best of British hospitality."

Rogge praised the London organising committee LOCOG, the volunteers who worked at the event, and the spectators and public for providing the "soundtrack" to the Games.

He also praised the athletes, saying they had earned the respect and admiration of a global audience for their commitment to fair play, respect for opponents and grace in defeat as well as victory.

"Many young people will be inspired to take up a sport or to pursue their dreams," said Rogge as he handed over the Games to Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and the Olympic cauldron was extinguished before rock band The Who took centre stage.

The wording used by the IOC president at the closing ceremony is always closely watched by the Games' organisers and other cities vying for the right to host future Olympics.

Rogge, a Belgian surgeon who steps down as IOC president next year after 12 years in the role, described the Beijing games as "truly exceptional".

He called the Athens Games in 2004 "unforgettable, dream Games".

Former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch was in the habit of describing each Games as "the best ever", with the notable exception of Atlanta in 1996 which he called "most exceptional", incurring him the wrath of the American city.

Regarding Gold IRA Investing | Class Act Homes

An Individual Retirement Account is a great investment solution for one?s future. This investment alternative was designed by the government as a means to save for retirement. This type of investment provides for deferred taxation. As a result Individual Retirement Account owners don?t pay any kind of income taxation for their IRAs till they withdraw the funds. There are many types of commodities that may be used in the IRA. Platinum, gold, silver, and palladium are permitted to be included in an IRA since the passing of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.

The usage of gold as a way of investment stems from the truth that the metal has been utilized as a form of money for millennia due to its stable worth. The precious metal is significant in several industries and features various functions. The value of gold rises whenever the demand goes up. It is nothing like other types of investments. The gold coins should have a pureness of 99.99 percent and such must be authorized as lawful tender. Coins which are accepted in an IRA include American Gold Eagle, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, Australian Gold Nugget, and American Buffalo.

People should look into a number of points before plunging into gold IRA investments. Many specialists don?t think using gold in the IRA doesn?t take full advantage of tax advantages. For account holders to make money, they must sell off the precious metals with a greater amount. Another issue involved with IRA investments would be that the Internal Revenue Service demands that the IRA be managed by a trust company, brokerage firm, or a bank. Only a few trustees can deal in gold. If an holder?s Individual Retirement Account plan does not offer investments in gold, the plan holder will have to start a plan with a company which allows investment in gold.

There are different IRAs for different owners. Prior to undertaking gold IRA, one must check with the manager of an Individual Retirement Account. The custodian of an Individual Retirement Account will be the bank which offers the plan. For one to make an investment in gold, he should have a self-directed account which permits gold investing.

Individual Retirement Account owners should deposit funds to their retirement accounts. Such deposits may be as much as 5000 dollars a year into an account. If someone contributes 5000 dollars, the money will grow to $6000 on turning fifty years old. Plan owners may transfer funds from an existing IRA to a different one. Nonetheless, the IRS is really rigorous concerning IRA transfers. A person must cautiously stick to the rules of the handler on Individual Retirement Account transfers.

Opting for gold Individual Retirement Account investments gives a fairly profitable investment opportunity for people who want returns when they reach retirement. It?s a smart way of preparing for the future. To learn more, check out: GoldIRAInvestings.Com

PFT: Tebow doesn't give Sanchez reason to worry

Pittsburgh Steelers v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

At a time when no one is questioning the job security of Eagles head coach Andy Reid, the man Reid has hired to represent the Eagles head coach has decided to grandstand about Reid?s job security.

Agent Bob LaMonte reiterated on Saturday that owner Jeffrey Lurie has given Reid a verbal guarantee of indefinite employment.

?[Lurie] has stated again and again, any time that I?ve been with him, that was as long as he?s the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles Andy Reid would be his coach,? LaMonte told a group of reporters at training camp on Saturday, via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.? ?And I?d say the proof of the pie is in the pudding.? He?s been here 14 years.?

While LaMonte reportedly has shared this story on multiple past occasions, this time Lurie opted to respond.

?Bob is a great agent who we have an outstanding relationship with,? Lurie said in a statement.? ?As much respect as all of us have for Andy Reid, it is the nature of the profession that all coaches, executives and players are evaluated each year.? That?s the way we have always operated.? But our focus right now, and I know Andy feels the same way, is solely on the upcoming 2012 season.?

In other words, Lurie is saying that Reid ? like any other employee ? can be gone after any given year.? Including this year.

The timing of the back-and-forth is odd, to say the least.? Reid?s eldest son, Garrett, died less than a week ago, prompting notoriously fickle Philly fans to unconditionally embrace Reid in the wake of his personal tragedy.

In our view, LaMonte shouldn?t have said what he said, and Lurie shouldn?t have responded.

Yeah, LaMonte was asked whether Reid is on the hot seat in 2012, a fair question given that Lurie hinted strongly in January that Reid needs to have a big season in his 14th year in order to get a 15th one.? But given recent events, LaMonte should have said something like, ?Andy has bigger concerns right now than whether he?ll keep his job with the Eagles after the 2012 season.?

Since LaMonte didn?t say that, Reid would be wise to say that.? Otherwise, it fairly will be presumed that he has ratified the comments of the man who is paid to speak for the coach.

Reid also would be justified to pay a visit to Lurie?s office and ask why the owner deemed it prudent and necessary to publicly disagree with LaMonte?s comments, in light of the events of the past week.

Chances are that the parties will find a way to smooth things over.? However, there?s also a small chance, given the emotions that surely have been stirred during the toughest week of Reid?s life, that the LaMonte-Lurie tit-for-tat could cause the relationship between coach and owner (or coach and agent) to spiral out of control, quickly.

Afghan policeman kills 10 fellow policemen

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A member of the Afghan National Police opened fire at his colleagues at a checkpoint in southwestern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least 10 of his fellow policemen, officials said.

The killings come a day after two Afghans, including a policeman, shot and killed six U.S. service members in separate attacks in neighboring Helmand province in the volatile south.

Afghan attacks on their international partners are on the rise and have heightened mistrust between foreign forces and the Afghan soldiers, police and others they are training and mentoring. Cases where members of the Afghan security forces kill within their own ranks are rare, but have been reported in the past.

Shakila Hakimi, a member of the Nimroz provincial council, said the policeman is believed to have links to militants. He opened fire on his colleagues in Dilaram district.

The policeman was killed in an ensuing gunbattle, she said in a telephone call from the provincial capital of Zaranj, along Afghanistan's western border with Iran.

"The checkpoint is in a remote area of a remote district," Hakimi said. "The telecommunications are poor and we are not able to get more details."

Hakimi said the provincial governor has sent a team to the scene to get more details about what happened.
