Western Herald ? Kalamazoo offers plenty of summer arts and ...

Summer is a time for entertainment and Kalamazoo has many great events happening in the area from food to music to theatre.

Farmers Alley Theatre is presenting their production of ?Next To Normal? on June 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 and 23. The story of addiction and mental instability is a Pulitzer Prize winning show. The theatre then closes their current season with ?Life Could Be a Dream? on July 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, August 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11. The musical features many ?50s doo-wop hits. Tickets for both shows can be purchased online at www.farmersalleytheatre.com.

Center Stage Theatre in Comstock will be presenting ?Seussical,? a musical based on many classic characters created by Dr. Seuss, on July 12, 13, 14, 19 and 20. Characters from The Cat in the Hat to Horton the Elephant will be present and singing throughout this all-ages show. Tickets can be purchased at the door of the Comstock High School auditorium.

Fancy Pants Theater presents a local show called ?Dick: The Musical? by Dahlia Kandinsky and PS Lorio on June 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22. The show follows the story of Eve Adams, who wakes up one morning to find she?s grown the anatomical parts necessary to make her a male. Tickets are available at the door of Fancy Pants Theater.

The Kalamazoo Greek Festival is June 6, 7 and 8 at the Arcadia Creek Festival Place. The festival will bring Greek food, culture and entertainment to Kalamazoo. In addition, the festival will be headlined by Wisconsin based U2 Zoo, a U2 cover band, on June 7 and Seattle?s post-grunge rockers Candlebox, known for their hit song ?Far Behind.? Admission is $7 on June 6,7 and 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. June 7 and 8 admission after 7 p.m. is $12.

The Kalamazoo Pride event is June 14 and 15 at the Arcadia. The event will feature a drag show, an electronic DJ, music by Manila Luzon, Justin Jones, Brody Ray and D?j? vu and a new beer from Bell?s called Sparkleberry.

The Kalamazoo Island Festival will also be at the Arcadia on June 20, 21 and 22. Headlined by reggae star Warrior King on June 21 and reggae legend Mykal Rose on June 22, the Island Festival will have island-based food and drink from local food vendors.

The Arcadia also hosts the Kalamazoo Irish Fest on June 28 and 29. The Irish Fest brings Irish food and drink and Irish and Celtic music from Bill Grogan?s Goat, Hoolie, Kin Fyre, Ladies of Longford, Steel City Rovers and more.

The 20th annual Kalamazoo Blues Festival is also at the Arcadia on July 11, 12, and 13. The festival will feature music from Big Boss Blues Band, Selwyn Birchwood, Blues Caravan, Marble Garden, Kenny Neal, Deanna Bogar, Lil Ed & the Blues Imperials and more.

The Kalamazoo R&B and Funk Festival is at the Arcadia on July 19 and 20. Headliners are The Floaters on July 19 and The Dazz Band on July 20.

The 27th annual Taste of Kalamazoo Festival will be held July 25, 26 and 27 at the Arcadia. The food will represent many different styles while still being local. Musical guests have not yet been announced, but last years? event featured ?90s alt-rockers The Verve Pipe.

The Arcadia also will host Kalamazoo Ribfest on August 1, 2 and 3. The competition will feature food from Kalamazoo as well as Ohio, Texas, Illinois and Virginia. The musical guests have not been announced, but last year?s headliners were country star Travis Tritt and 80s and 90s hair-rockers Skid Row.

The Arcadia Rock Fest is on August 16 and 17. The admission fee is a $10 cover charge. Music on August 16 will be performed by Bruce Springsteen tribute band Bruce in the USA and Led Zeppelin tribute band Led ZepAgain. August 17 will feature Michael Jackson tribute band Who?s Bad and another artist yet to be announced.

The Kalamazoo State Theatre is playing host to Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros on June 24. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are well known for their 2009 song ?Home.? The band has played many large festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. Tickets to see them in Kalamazoo are $30 and available on www.ticketmaster.com.

In addition to these events, many local musicians and comedians will be performing at numerous local venues. It may be summer in Kalamazoo, but there is no shortage of things to do in a town so rich in arts and entertainment. Enjoy the summer.
