The evolution of the Divas division

Some of the WWE Universe might say the Divas division has been diminished, having lost a whole half-dozen of its best and brightest over the past twelve months. And it?s true: at least in terms of depth, fate carved quite the swath through WWE?s women?s division in 2012, but the depletion has also initiated a new era of opportunity for the remaining Divas. In one turn around the sun, Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix, Maxine, Kharma and The Bella Twins have all left WWE, with no small amount of shock.

At first glance, that?s a sudden, dark cloud hanging over one of WWE?s most time-honored divisions. But the whole process has turned out to be something along the lines of an evolution for the Divas. True, the abrupt change in the Divas? landscape has been jarring for the WWE Universe. But the transformation seems to us a breath of fresh air, a chance at a fresh start, and an opportunity to redefine the very definition of a WWE Diva.

Finally, a Victory Against Mountaintop Removal

Photo by Antrim Caskey. Mountaintop-removal and valley-fill coal mining at Massey Energy's Edwight site in Sundial, W.Va., on April 16, 2009.

Since the 1990s, small bands of Appalachian residents, regional environmental groups, and more recently the EPA have fought what often seemed like a futile battle against mountaintop-removal mining, the radical practice of blowing the tops off mountains to get at the coal seams underneath. The coal companies, backed by local political establishments and conservative jurists skeptical of possible regulatory overreach, have fended off multiple attempts to shut down mountaintop operations. As a result, an ever-widening swath of Appalachian peaks and valleys has been obliterated: approximately 2,200 square miles, according to the EPA, in what is likely a conservative estimate because the footprint often extends beyond the permit zones. That?s an area almost the size of Delaware.

That expanse kept growing as the battles mostly went in coal?s favor. Until this month, that is, when environmental groups won a decisive legal victory over a coal company. It may prove to be turning point in the war over the mountaintops, and for the future of coal.

On Nov. 15, St. Louis-based Patriot Coal agreed to phase out its mountaintop excavations and redirect its efforts back to underground mining. Adding a symbolic punch, Patriot agreed to decommission its two draglines?enormous boom excavators that do the actual mountaintop demolitions?and can sell them only on the condition that they?re never used in the Appalachian coalfields again. Coal executives usually shrug off complaints about mountaintop-removal impacts as the grumbling of dilettantes and naysayers who don?t understand the need for mining jobs. Yet here was the practically unheard-of spectacle of Patriot?s CEO, Ben Hatfield, acknowledging that mountaintop removal affected both people and ecology: ?Patriot Coal recognizes that our mining operations impact the communities in which we operate in significant ways, and we are committed to maximizing the benefits of this agreement for our stakeholders, including our employees and neighbors," Hatfield said in court. "We believe the proposed settlement will result in a reduction of our environmental footprint."

True, a specific chain of misfortunes brought Patriot to the table. It?s looking to exit from bankruptcy, the result of falling coal prices, bad business decisions, and huge pension obligations. It was in this context that Appalachian environmental groups forced their issue. Patriot was also on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars to clean up discharges of the mining pollutant selenium from its operations. Pulling the plug on mountaintop removal was part of the cleanup settlement. Other companies aren?t planning to follow suit: ?No, the decision and agreement is theirs and it does not affect our mining plans,? a spokesman for Alpha Natural Resources, the leading surface mining company in West Virginia, told the Charleston Gazette.

But Patriot?s woes aren?t unique. They grew out of endemic problems with mountaintop removal that have been getting worse, putting mounting legal, regulatory and economic pressure on the companies that do it.

Appalachian forests are an ancient and unique ecosystem, one of the oldest in the world, with some of the highest levels of biodiversity to be found in a temperate zone. Destroying them is almost by definition ecological disaster. But because mountaintop removal in Appalachia is a relatively new phenomenon, it?s only in the past few years that scientists have begun to fully document not just the extent, but the nature of the damage.

Mountaintop removal is a three-step process. In the first, peaks are dismantled, descending layer by layer, using explosives and draglines, and the coal harvested. I?ve been to Patriot?s Hobet mine in Boone County, W.Va. Its sprawling operation?the largest single mountaintop-removal mine, covering more than 25 square miles?evokes the smoky, cratered, lifeless aftermath of a World War I battlefield. In the second phase, the vast piles of rock and soil debris this creates?larger in volume than mountaintops themselves, because of the extra space between all those boulders?are dumped in neighboring valleys, creating so-called ?valley fills.? Finally, the lopped-off mountaintop is usually bulldozed and planted with something green, creating artificial meadows where none existed before.

The worst problem isn?t actually the missing peaks. Forests can be replanted, and sometimes the more virtuous companies actually do this. It?s what the mines do to the delicate mountain waterways. Dumping a mountaintop?s worth of rock into a valley doesn?t just obliterate all life there. It stops up headwater streams, literally the wellspring for the forest ecosystem and the point of origin for entire watersheds. So far more than 1,200 miles of stream beds have been buried. These cannot be restored. And rainwater that once would have fed those nascent brooks passes through a filter of mashed-up mountain instead.

?There are coal residues mixed with shale rock that?s been buried for millennia, trace metals, pyrite, all these salts weathering out of the rock. Then it?s sitting right in the stream network,? says Emily Bernhardt, a Duke University biologist who has been studying the impacts of mining. ?As it rains, it?s basically a chemical battery, if you will, that is constantly releasing its contents into that stream network.?

This ?battery effect? generates a range of problems for miles downstream. It injects high levels of mineral ions into the water, where high electrical conductivity harms many kinds of aquatic life. Hard-hit species include mayflies, which happen to sit at the bottom of the forest food chain and are a broad indicator of ecosystem health. An EPA study that first drew wide attention to this problem in 2008 said: ?Our results indicate that [mountaintop mining] is strongly related to downstream biological impairment.?

Cyber Monday Generates $1.46 E-Commerce Haul, Mobile ...

A dizzying array of data points about retail sales and consumer shopping have been flowing steadily since Friday. Among them are comScore?s final Cyber-Weekend e-commerce sales projections. Over the the four day extended holiday weekend US e-commerce sales were about $2.86 billion.

Cyber Monday online sales were just shy of the anticipated $1.5 billion ? at $1.46 billion. The largest online shopping growth over last year occurred on the US Thanksgiving holiday itself. However Cyber Monday qualified as the largest single e-commerce shopping day to date in terms of dollars spent.

Cyber Monday, when it was (unfortunately) invented or coined in 2005,?referred?to the Monday after Thanksgiving when people came into work with a faster internet connection and so could shop online more easily. That?s all changed now of course.

According to comScore data, fully half of Cyber Monday?s impressive sales came from people shopping from home. Another modest but meaningful chunk came from international users seeking to take advantage of US deals.

IBM, which issued data from Black Friday sales, did the same thing?yesterday?and provided?a range of figures about consumer shopping and spending on Monday. The company said that online spending grew approximately 30 percent vs. 2011. It also reported that 13 percent of all online Cyber Monday sales were from mobile devices (i.e., smartphones, tablets) compared with 16 percent on Friday.

Payment processor?Braintree?reported, in an email, an even larger?proportion?of online sales coming from mobile. The company, which handles payments for 50 of the top 500 e-commerce sites, said that its customers on Black Friday ?saw a near 50 percent increase in consumers using their mobile phones to make purchases, with mobile payments increasing to 29 percent of all online purchases.?

Adobe asserted that ?$1 out of $4 spent online [came] from a mobile device ? tablet or smart?phone? on Black Friday. On Monday the figure was 22 percent.

Source: Adobe

While comScore didn?t report on the mobile percentage of Cyber Monday or broader holiday weekend sales, we can estimate that number based on the data from these various other sources.

If we conservatively assume that something like 18 percent of all online sales over the course of the five days came from mobile devices, that would translate into roughly $774 million in mobile-commerce sales.

Clinton releases road map for AIDS-free generation

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In an ambitious road map for slashing the global spread of AIDS, the Obama administration says treating people sooner and more rapid expansion of other proven tools could help even the hardest-hit countries begin turning the tide of the epidemic over the next three to five years.

"An AIDS-free generation is not just a rallying cry ? it is a goal that is within our reach," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who ordered the blueprint, said in the report.

"Make no mistake about it, HIV may well be with us into the future but the disease that it causes need not be," she said at the State Department Thursday.

President Barack Obama echoed that promise.

"We stand at a tipping point in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and working together, we can realize our historic opportunity to bring that fight to an end," Obama said in a proclamation to mark World AIDS Day on Saturday.

Some 34 million people worldwide are living with HIV, and despite a decline in new infections over the last decade, 2.5 million people were infected last year.

Given those staggering figures, what does an AIDS-free generation mean? That virtually no babies are born infected, young people have a much lower risk than today of becoming infected, and that people who already have HIV would receive life-saving treatment.

That last step is key: Treating people early in their infection, before they get sick, not only helps them survive but also dramatically cuts the chances that they'll infect others. Yet only about 8 million HIV patients in developing countries are getting treatment. The United Nations aims to have 15 million treated by 2015.

Other important steps include: Treating more pregnant women, and keeping them on treatment after their babies are born; increasing male circumcision to lower men's risk of heterosexual infection; increasing access to both male and female condoms; and more HIV testing.

The world spent $16.8 billion fighting AIDS in poor countries last year. The U.S. government is the leading donor, spending about $5.6 billion.

Thursday's report from PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, outlines how progress could continue at current spending levels ? something far from certain as Congress and Obama struggle to avert looming budget cuts at year's end ? or how faster progress is possible with stepped-up commitments from hard-hit countries themselves.

Clinton warned Thursday that the U.S. must continue doing its share: "In the fight against HIV/AIDS, failure to live up to our commitments isn't just disappointing, it's deadly."

The report highlighted Zambia, which already is seeing some declines in new cases of HIV. It will have to treat only about 145,000 more patients over the next four years to meet its share of the U.N. goal, a move that could prevent more than 126,000 new infections in that same time period. But if Zambia could go further and treat nearly 198,000 more people, the benefit would be even greater ? 179,000 new infections prevented, the report estimates.

In contrast, if Zambia had to stick with 2011 levels of HIV prevention, new infections could level off or even rise again over the next four years, the report found.

Advocacy groups said the blueprint offers a much-needed set of practical steps to achieve an AIDS-free generation ? and makes clear that maintaining momentum is crucial despite economic difficulties here and abroad.

"The blueprint lays out the stark choices we have: To stick with the baseline and see an epidemic flatline or grow, or ramp up" to continue progress, said Chris Collins of amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research.

His group has estimated that more than 276,000 people would miss out on HIV treatment if U.S. dollars for the global AIDS fight are part of across-the-board spending cuts set to begin in January.

Thursday's report also urges targeting the populations at highest risk, including gay men, injecting drug users and sex workers, especially in countries where stigma and discrimination has denied them access to HIV prevention services.

"We have to go where the virus is," Clinton said.

(AP) ? Before the civil war, Ramiz Moussa was a middle class civil servant who processed fines for littering, illegal construction and disturbing the peace in Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

Now, the 40-year-old squats with other rebels in damaged, abandoned homes in this embattled town. He rarely sees his family and thinks of little beyond the next attack on government soldiers.

"We no longer count the days," he said, standing in a rubble-strewn alley, holding a rifle and two rocket-propelled grenades. "Today we're in a battle, but we can't remember when it started, much less the past battles. You could ask me what day it is, but I can't tell you."

A dark realization is spreading across northern Syria that despite 20 months of violence and recent rebel gains, an end to the war to topple President Bashar Assad is nowhere in sight.

As a result, civilians and rebel fighters are digging in, building an infrastructure to secure rebel towns, care for the wounded and escalate the fight against Assad's forces.

Although incomplete and often hobbled by competition between factions, these efforts have produced a rebel force capable of victories nearly unimaginable months ago. And recent interviews in the northern provinces of Idlib and Aleppo with more than a dozen rebels and civilian activists gave no sign that they would give up soon.

"At the start I never imagined it would last this long," said rebel field commander Abdulllah Qadi, 25. "We have been at it for 20 months and we could be at it for 20 more. All we can do is keep fighting."

Syria's uprising started with protests calling for political change in March 2011. Like many in the opposition, Qadi said the successful toppling of dictators in Egypt and Tunisia gave him hope that Assad, too, would soon fall.

Instead, his regime launched a relentless crackdown, causing many to take up arms. The conflict escalated this year into a civil war with scores of rebel groups fighting Assad's military. Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed.

Syria's rebels have claimed a string of victories in recent weeks, storming military bases, boosting their armories with looted munitions and overrunning a hydroelectric dam that powers a large swath of the country.

Fueling these advances is greater organization among rebel brigades. At least three major umbrella groups have formed to solicit private aid from abroad and shuttle arms and ammunition to brigades inside Syria.

"At first, the regime's presence in many places prevented us from bringing our forces together, but after we liberated some areas, we saw that we needed to unify the forces on the ground," said Gen. Ahmed al-Faj of the so-called Joint Command. The other groups are the Syria Liberation Front and the Military Councils of the Free Syrian Army.

In one striking example of the opposition's new capabilities, hundreds of rebels recently stormed the base of the Syrian army's 46th Regiment near Aleppo after a coordinated two-month siege, taking away tanks, armored vehicles and truckloads of munitions they plan to use against Assad's forces.

But rebel advances remain limited. While they control a strip of territory along the Turkish border and have carved out pockets near Damascus and in the sparsely populated eastern provinces, much of the country remains beyond their reach. Even in Idlib, a center of rebel activity, the army still has four major towns and two bases, plus a half-dozen checkpoints to prevent rebel expansion to the west and south.

The rebels also remain largely helpless against the regime's air power, whose daily air raids often kill civilians. Many fighters are bitter that the U.S. and others have not intervened to stop Assad's air force as they did in Libya against Moammar Gadhafi last year.

"We saw in Libya the aid that the U.S. and NATO gave and how quickly the battle went," said fighter Abdullah Biram. "So why don't they come here? Don't they see all the people dying?"

One recent evening, a helicopter dropped a bomb on the village of Maaret al-Naasan in Idlib. Moments later, Bilal Haidar emerged from the stairwell he was hiding under to find that his parents, six of his siblings, his sister-in-law and three neighbors were killed when their houses collapsed.

"I have no one left," he said the next day, standing in the rubble of his former home. "My whole family is gone."

Civilian leaders have scrambled to fill the void left by the government's withdrawal, setting up hospitals with operating rooms and security brigades to prevent crime.

A half-dozen Idlib towns have also set up Islamic courts under the jurisdiction of a High Judicial Council, said Salah Hablas, a Muslim cleric involved in the effort.

When asked what the most common crimes were, he read off the names of a dozen people, all wanted on suspicion of spying for the regime.

Hablas, sporting a long gray beard, dark sunglasses and a black track suit, said the courts apply a mix of Syrian and Islamic law and have sentenced one person to death. While that sentence has yet to be carried out, others have.

"If there a punishment for anyone, whether whipping or anything else, it is carried out in the public square," he said.

The complete mobilization for war is clear in Harem, a scenic town rich with orange and persimmon groves, built around an imposing, hilltop castle near the Turkish border.

After months of clashes, rebels managed to besiege the remaining troops inside the castle. They try daily to force them out.

Sniper fire, artillery blasts and near-daily government airstrikes have sent most residents fleeing through rubble-strewn streets. Rebels squat in abandoned homes, smashing holes in walls to create passages to the front line. Between clashes, they make tea on wood fires or pick fruit, much of it about to rot because farmers can't harvest it.

Captured regime soldiers are held in a former police station and medics treat the wounded in a farmhouse before they return to battle or are driven to hospitals.

Rows of fresh graves line a grassy, tree-covered compound abutting the barbed wire of the Turkish border.

Mohammed Quweiri, 63, pointed to the grave of his son, killed by a sniper. Next to him lay a school principal and a mosque preacher, also slain by snipers, and a rebel commander who died in an airstrike that also killed 15 others, Quweiri said.

Four graves nearby held the remains of some of the 10 people killed in another airstrike near the town's mosque.

Sitting in the dirt nearby, Sobhia Qarboulad, 55, said her brother Mohammed was among the dead. When the first missile hit near their house, he rushed to help the wounded. A second missile hit soon after and he never came back.

Since then, the family has been living in the abandoned bakery where her brother once worked. When they hear a fighter jet, they collect the children and flee to the olive groves, she said, where no roof can collapse on their heads.

"We have no money to leave and no place to go," she said. "Only God can provide protection."

As she spoke, rebels crowded around the bodies of two fighters killed that day while an old man dug a new grave.

Breathing Life into a Forgotten Family Heirloom - Old Town Home

This is the story of a chair. It's not just any chair, it's a special chair. No, it won't fly us around the room, it won't grant us wishes, and it won't run errands or do chores for us, no matter how nicely we ask. But if it won't do any of that, then how is it special? Well, this chair is a time machine of sorts. The chair I'm speaking of is Wendy's great grandfather's rectory chair.

As children of families with deep heritage and histories, we both know stories and have knowledge of our lineage. Neither of us are from any sort of famous, powerful, or particularly wealthy families, and both of our families represent an eclectic mix of hard working individuals. The various sides of our families' roots in the United States were?established?anywhere from the industrial revolution to the Revolutionary War, all depending on the branch of our respective trees. But no matter the situation, each of our families came here with little, in hopes of providing more for their loved ones. For this very reason, antiques, keepsakes, and heirloom pieces passed from generation to generation are rare and treasured.

As a young girl, Wendy remembers this old, dirty, and wobbly chair sitting in her parents' basement. As the story goes, this chair once sat in a church rectory, and somehow ended up in her great grandfather's possession. Dark and splintered wood, worn with age and use, faded and torn fabric seat, and tattered burlap seat straps did little to tell the story of the possibly rich history the chair possesses. Instead, its current condition acted as more of a footnote to its largely unknown legend.

As a child, Wendy was unaware of the chair's eventual meaning to her. She always knew it was her great grandfather's chair, but figured it was a lost cause from a furniture or seating standpoint and was only being held onto for some sentimental purposes.

As we grew older and began to build an appreciation for our families' history, we both started searching for items that can hold a special meaning in our lives, and in the history of our families. At one point, Wendy asked her parents if they had any plans for the abandoned chair in their basement, and if they didn't, could we have it??Wendy's parents generously gifted the worn and tired chair and wished us luck.

We received the chair in 2004 and began work on it almost immediately. We had hoped to salvage it in some way, but were unsure given the tough shape much of the wood was in. Dry, cracked, splintered, and wobbly, the chair had seen better days.?While working on nail removal, one of the pegs slipped from the chair's arm revealing a completely failed glue joint. This joint failure explained the wobbly nature of the chair's structure.?We knew we'd need to do a little bit more aggressive of chair surgery if we were going to be able to use the piece for its intended purpose.

After we completely disassembled the chair, we were able to begin working on the chair in earnest.?Though we had every intention to restore the chair to its former glory, we had little?know how?at the time. Still newlyweds and with a "new" very old house, we had a project list longer than we could fathom and few specialized tools (such as cabinet clamps) that would be necessary. We had gotten off to a decent?start, but we put the project off to the side, where it sat for an additional eight years.

As luck would have it, our kitchen/sun porch "rethink" rolled around this summer. Knowing we'd need additional seating, Wendy raised the idea of using her great grandfather's chair for the room. She was hopeful we could work it in, but figured it would be more of a decorative element than functional. It's old wobble was so severe, she assumed we wouldn't be able to use it as viable seating.?After disassembling the chair, we were left with four pieces that needed a complete sanding and prep.

I did the majority of the remaining sanding using my Fein Multimaster oscillating tool and sanding pads I had cut to a more manageable size.?I found using the oscillating tool to be a bit slower, but it allowed me to get into the detail areas of the chair. I also found it was much less likely to leave those tiny little swirl marks you often see with an orbital sander.

After a few more hours the chair's sanding was complete. I went over the whole chair with 220 grit paper and "00" steel wool, we were ready for reassembly.

I've had an internal struggle over sanding this chair for quite some time. I mentioned in a prior post that my inexperience in what we're doing really showed when we were given the chair. Back in 2004 I was sanding everything raw, caulking gaps all over the place, and pocket hole screwing?everything?to death. I didn't yet have an appreciation for the patina and character that comes with "old."?Once I started to gain this appreciation, I began to regret my decision to take off all of the chair's original finish. Perhaps there was something I could have done to better preserve the chair's character?

Through much soul searching I came to a final conclusion. (Can you tell I take this chair seriously?) I determined that, if I had it to do over again I would not have sanded the chair so?aggressively. But what's done is done, and I know better for the next time, I just need to be sure I put as much effort into making this chair exactly what it should be with what I have to work with.

With the chair ready to assembly, I broke out my various cabinet clamps. These clamps were absolutely necessary in ensuring my ability to assemble the chair the way it once was and should always be.

I painted wood glue on the various dowels of the chair and also applied glue on the surfaces that accept the dowels.

Painting on the glue rather than just slopping it into place allows the joint to be securely made without having glue squeeze out all over the place.?Once all of the glue was applied, I made the necessary connections and clamped the whole chair back together.

The rear of the chair has two steel slot head screws that were the final pieces I had to insert. Once in place, I was able to take a step back at the famed chair finally reassembled.

After allowing several hours of dry time I removed the clamps and inspected the work. The chair was secure and sturdy. Even without a seat I could tell it would be plenty sturdy to act as actual seating. I brought the chair into the sun porch to see how it might eventually look in the space. It was nearly perfect.

I surprised Wendy by completing the chair assembly and putting it in place and I can't tell you how happy she was when she arrived home and saw it. She danced around and gave me a huge hug. We had longed talked about getting this chair back in place and it was finally becoming a reality.

We still have a fair amount of work left before we can call the project done. We need to stain the chair as well as install jute webbing, a burlap cover, and a seat cushion, but we can see the whole thing taking shape. We're planning to stain it a very dark brown a little later this week. We'll be sure to update you on progress.

What do you think of our sentimental heirloom and its placement in our sun porch? Do you have a piece of furniture in your home, that has been passed down from generation to generation? Maybe a family heirloom that you've worked to restore? If so, we'd love to hear all about it.

By DAVID DISHNEAU | Associated Press ? Published November 27, 2012 Modified November 28, 2012

FORT MEADE, Md. ? The mental health of a U.S. Army private is the focus of a pretrial hearing on charges that he gave classified information to the secret-sharing website WikiLeaks.

The hearing for Pfc. Bradley Manning resumes Wednesday at Fort Meade in Maryland. He's seeking dismissal of the case, alleging he was illegally punished before trial by being held in needlessly harsh conditions.

The defense is seeking testimony from an officer whose command included the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va. Manning was held there for nine months in highly restrictive, maximum custody and "prevention of injury" status.

The former installation commander, retired Col. Daniel Choike (CHOY'-kee), testified Tuesday that brig commanders refused to ease Manning's confinement conditions as recommended by psychiatrists.

Manning faces a possible life sentence if convicted of aiding the enemy.

alphadogg writes "Dr. Joseph E. Murray, the Nobel laureate who conducted the world's first successful organ transplant, died Monday at the Boston hospital where the pioneering surgery was performed. He was 93. On Dec. 23, 1954, in Operating Room 2 of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Dr. Murray took the healthy kidney of Ronald Herrick and sutured it into the donor's dying identical twin, Richard. With that 5?-hour operation, Dr. Murray and his team saved a life, sparked an ethical debate that still echoes today, and opened medicine to a new frontier. Murray, who focused on plastic and reconstructive surgery for most of his career, was recognized with the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1990."

96% The House I Live In

All Critics (47) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (45) | Rotten (2)

The House I Live In is a work of journalism, not propaganda: Jarecki has done his research and leaves it to you to decide what to make of it.

If [it] takes a while to focus, it eventually becomes the conversation starter the subject desperately needs.

Jarecki takes a highly original approach to create a compelling, thought-provoking look at a highly relevant and controversial topic.

An absorbing, disturbing sit.

It's a film as profoundly sad as it is enraging and potentially galvanizing, and it's one of the most important pieces of nonfiction to hit the screen in years.

Jarecki's case is so compelling that, when he concludes by comparing the drug war to the Holocaust, the obvious charge of hyperbole doesn't quite stick.

One of the finest documentaries of the year, this involving film is lucid, sharply well shot and edited, and ultimately so important that it's rather terrifying to watch.

A wide-ranging examination of the futile, self-defeating "war on drugs" ...

One of the best documentaries out this year, and a must-see for Senate and Congress in America.

An angry and personal attack on America's war on drugs contends it is a grotesquely wasteful public-works scheme.

Jarecki is a stickler for sticking to his subject, or sub-subject, until it squeals like a leech victim.

Jarecki offers 100 small conclusions rather than one big one for you to take away.

This urgent and formidably smart movie - perhaps the year's most important political documentary - has opened minds and changed laws already.

Tells a complex story with troubling ease.

Persuasively argues that punitive laws against users have historically involved disproportionately targeting poor, non-white communities.

Jarecki's parade of experts and eyewitnesses is impressive, as are his arguments that race and class prejudice enter into the policing efforts of America's drug warriors.

Jarecki's conclusion is powerfully plausible

There's no confusion about Jarecki's point of view in The House I Live In- he's out to make the case that America's drug laws cause far more damage, to individuals and communities, than drug use ever has

The film deserves credit for offering a unique perspective on a relevant social issue.

The House I Live In is depressing stuff, but it sparks the fires of anger, and from that anger, possible action.

This film could serve as a potent tool for those trying to change 40 years of public policy.

A thought-provoking, compelling documentary that encourages you to look at our national drug policy in a broader context.

Statistics abound in this thorough analysis of the declared war [on drugs] that, like Vietnam, we are losing.

Mass Effect 3 Wii U Special Edition- Review | Video Game Blog ...

Genre: Role Playing Game

Platform: WiiU

Developer: Bioware

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Released: November 16th 2012

Mass Effect 3 was released back in March on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC from BioWare. Finally Nintendo fans joined in the fun as Mass Effect 3 was released on Wii U on November 18th. Mass Effect 3 is the final chapter of Commander Sheperd?s battle against The Reapers.

Throughout Mass Effect 3, Commander Shepard will be bringing the civilizations of the galaxy together as allies to take back Earth and repel the Reaper invasion. The player?s choices throughout not only Mass Effect 3, but the entire trilogy, will affect the fate of these civilizations and the endings the player can receive.

Mass Effect 3 is final game in the original Mass Effect Trilogy. ?The original Mass Effect was released in 2007 and Mass Effect 2 in 2009. While Mass Effect 3 was released in 2012, it was originally scheduled for Q3 2011. Not much is known why it was delayed.

Mass Effect 3 begins on Earth with Commander Shepard having been detained following the events in the Arrival DLC. Out of the blue, the Reapers attack and the planet is overwhelmed. Shepard escapes a burning Vancouver on the Normandy with the help of Admiral Anderson and the Kaiden/Ashley and leaves to gather help from other species while Anderson coordinates human resistance on Earth. Before leaving the Sol System, Shepard is ordered to Mars by Admiral Hackett who claims that researchers have uncovered something that may give humanity a chance against the Reapers. There, Shepard battles Cerberus forces and encounters former squad-mate Liara T?Soni, who has discovered plans for a Prothean superweapon that may be capable of defeating the Reapers. Before leaving the facility, Shepard speaks with a now-hostile Illusive Man, who claims he wants to use the Prothean weapon to take control of the Reapers.

The game plays out almost exactly as it does on Xbox 360 or PS3. The big difference? The Wii U?s GamePad. This might be the best thing ?for the game. On the GamePad it shows you the map of the area you are in, plus it shows you where the enemies are. This is a HUGE help because it allows you to move yourself within an area without running into enemies who take down your shields. The GamePad also allows you to simply touch the screen to pick a power that you, or your?squad mates, use in combat. This is also a HUGE help?because?you no longer need to freeze the game and pull up the power wheel. This allows you to choose any power while you continue to fight.

The storyline of Mass Effect 3 is great BUT the Mass Effect Genesis Comic before the game is very flawed. The Genesis Comic allows you to choose major decisions in both the original Mass Effect game and Mass Effect 2. The problem? It doesn?t really give you that many choices. Let me give you a couple examples. In Mass Effect 2 you can choose to save or destroy the research data for the Krogan genophage cure. In the Genesis storyline, you don?t get to decide that. You automatically destroy the data, which means Eve, the female krogan in Mass Effect 3, will die and Wrex won?t trust you for most of the game. One other example of the Genesis Comic flaws, the suicide mission. In Mass Effect 2, you can choose to gain every squadmates?loyalty?before going through the Omega 4 relay and be able to save your crew from The Collectors. Not so in the Genesis Comic. You have to choose whether you want your squadmates loyal or save the crew. If you choose to save the crew, all your squadmates but Miranda and Garrus die. If you choose to gain loyalty, all the crew except Joker and EDI die. The last flaw I?ll mention is the romance choices for Mass Effect 2, or should I say the complete lack of choices. The Genesis Comic only allows you to choose a romance between Tali or Miranda, nobody else.

The graphics in the game are the same as Xbox 360 or PS3. Don?t believe what some people are saying about Mass Effect 3 Wii U. It does not run slow and the graphics are not rushed. I?ve played through the whole game and the multiplayer and never once had a problem with graphics. They looked great and played just the same as Xbox or PS3.

I would comment on the sound in the game but like before, it?s the same as Xbox or PS3. There?s no difference in sounds, the sound all works exactly when it should, and their aren?t any problems with the sound.

Mass Effect 3 Wii U is a great game on the new Wii U. It finally brings the Mass Effect series to Nintendo fans and it delivers big time. The problem with it is that there are flaws. The Genesis Comic doesn?t really let you make many choices from Mass Effect 2 and there is NO additional DLC for Wii U. The in game bonus weapons are very nice and the GamePad makes the gaming experience even more fun. BioWare still has some work to do on Mass Effect for Wii U but this is a good start.

PROS:

  • Plays exactly the same as Xbox 360 or PS3 version,
  • the GamePad definitely makes the game even better
  • the game itself is a?masterpiece.

CONS:

  • No additional DLC will come for Wii U
  • Genesis Comic is very flawed by limiting your choices for Mass Effect 2 storyline.

Rating:????????????

9.5 out of 10

Mass Effect 3 Wii U costs $59.99 and is rated M for Mature. Game available in stores now.

Utility worker pierced pipe before dramatic Mass. gas blast

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- A natural gas explosion that injured 18 people and damaged 42 buildings in Springfield's entertainment district was blamed Sunday on a utility worker who accidently punctured a high-pressure pipeline while looking for a leak.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said the Friday night blast in one of New England's largest cities was caused by "human error." He didn't name the Columbia Gas Co. worker who pierced the pipe while responding to reports of a gas leak.

The worker damaged the underground pipe while using a metal probe to locate the source of the leak, Coan said. A flood of gas then built up in a building that housed a strip club, and some kind of spark touched off the blast, officials said.

Coan said the employee was following older markings on a sidewalk that indicated the location of the gas line. He appeared to be an appropriate distance from the line, but the markings were incorrect and the worker accidentally punctured the pipe.

A message left for a Columbia Gas spokeswoman wasn't immediately returned. Columbia Gas, a subsidiary of public company NiSource Inc., announced earlier Sunday that it planned to open a claims center for residents and businesses affected by the explosion at City Hall on Monday.

Preliminary reports showed the blast damaged 42 buildings housing 115 residential units. Three buildings were immediately condemned, and 24 others require additional inspections by structural engineers to determine whether they are safe. The building that housed the Scores Gentleman's Club was completely destroyed.

After the pipe was ruptured, authorities evacuated several buildings. Most of the people injured were part of a group of gas workers, firefighters and police officers who ducked for cover behind a utility truck just before the blast. The truck was demolished.

Some officials said it was a miracle no one was killed. Springfield Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant praised the actions of city firefighters.

"The firefighters did an excellent job evacuating the area which certainly prevented additional civilian injuries and saved many lives," Conant said.

Columbia Gas officials have been cooperating with investigators and have determined that there are no more gas leaks in the neighborhood, Mayor Domenic Sarno said.

Coan said the investigation is being turning over to the state Department of Public Utilities. It's not clear whether investigators will ever be able to determine what caused the spark that ignited the explosion.

Springfield, which is 90 miles west of Boston and has about 150,000 residents, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. It's known as the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is not near the blast site.

The city has been rebuilding from damage caused by a tornado in June 2011.

Camacho's mother says life support will end

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? Hector "Macho" Camacho will be taken off life support, his mother said Friday night, indicating she would have doctors do that Saturday. It was a decision the former championship boxer's eldest son opposed.

The boxer's mother, Maria Matias, told reporters outside the hospital where Camacho lay unconscious since being shot in the face that she had decided doctors should remove life support, but only after three of his sons arrived in Puerto Rico early Saturday and had a chance to see him a last time.

"I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine," Matias said. "My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him," she added.

The three other sons were expected to arrive from the U.S. mainland around midnight Friday. "Until they arrive, we will not disconnect the machine," Matias said.

Another news conference was scheduled for Saturday morning at Centro Medico, the main trauma center for San Juan.

The former champion's mother has the final say in the matter, but his eldest son, Hector Jr., said he wants to keep his father alive.

"He's going to fight until the end. My father is a boxer," the son said.

Doctors have said Camacho is clinically brain dead from a shooting Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon. But relatives and friends told The Associated Press they were still wrestling with whether to remove him from life support.

"It is a very difficult decision, a very delicate decision," former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a longtime friend, said in a phone interview. "The last thing we lose is hope and faith. If there is still hope and faith, why not wait a little more?"

Aida Camacho, one of the boxer's aunts, said in an interview that the family could decide by late Friday whether to donate his organs.

As some relatives and friends continued to pray for a miracle, condolences kept coming in for Camacho's family and preparations began for memorials and a funeral Mass.

Gov. Luis Fortuno lamented what he called a sudden loss. "'Macho' will always be remembered for his spontaneity and charisma in and out of the ring," he said.

Also offering condolences was governor-elect Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who defeated Fortuno in November.

"The life of Macho Camacho, like other great athletes of ours, united the country," he said. "We celebrated his triumphs in the streets and we applauded him with noble sportsmanship when he didn't prevail."

Camacho was shot as he sat in a car with a friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Police reported no arrests and said investigators continued to interview potential witnesses. Capt. Rafael Rosa told reporters Friday that they are tracking down several leads, but added that very few witnesses were cooperating. He declined to say whether police had identified any suspects.

Hector Camacho Jr. lamented the violence that grips Puerto Rico, a U.S. island territory of nearly 4 million people that reported a record 1,117 homicides last year.

"Death, jail, drugs, killings," he said. "That's what the streets are now."

Camacho's sisters have said they would like to fly Camacho's body to New York and bury him there. Camacho grew up mostly in Harlem, earning the nickname the "Harlem Heckler."

He won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s and fought high-profile bouts against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champ's final comeback attempt. Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3.

Camacho battled drug, alcohol and other problems throughout his life. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison on burglary charges, but a judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation. A wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce.

Pitt crushes No. 21 Rutgers 27-6

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Rutgers officially isn't swapping the Big East for the Big Ten for another two years.

The 21st-ranked Scarlet Knights sure looked ready to check out early, though, in a lifeless 27-6 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Though Rutgers (9-2, 5-1 Big East) still managed to clinch a share of its first conference title after No. 19 Louisville was stunned at home by Connecticut, the Scarlet Knights head into a showdown with the Cardinals next Thursday reeling.

"It (stinks) to lose, but we still have something to play for," Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova said.

Even if it was the Panthers (5-6, 2-4) who performed like the team with everything on the line.

Pitt's defense swarmed the Scarlet Knights all afternoon. Nova completed just 18 of 37 passes for 157 yards with a touchdown and an interception and left briefly in first half after getting slammed to the ground on his right (throwing) shoulder.

"Their defensive linemen are really good," Nova said. "They put a lot of pressure on me, and we really didn't execute well enough in protection on their pass rush to make a difference."

The Scarlet Knights came in the Big East's biggest surprise, rising to the cusp of the school's first Bowl Championship Series berth despite losing program architect Greg Schiano to the NFL last winter.

First-year coach Kyle Flood stressed his team would not be distracted by an eventful week in which the program announced it was heading to the Big Ten in 2014, though the Scarlet Knights appeared to have their minds on other things while falling into an early 21-0 deficit.

"I didn't hear any of the talk about anything (other than the game)," Flood said. "To me, we had a focused football team coming in here, but we just didn't execute on the football field."

There were no such issues for the Panthers, who continued their maddening inconsistency while keeping their hopes for a fifth straight bowl appearance alive.

Tino Sunseri passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns in his last home game and fellow senior Ray Graham ran for 113 yards and a score as the Panthers beat a ranked opponent for the second time this season thanks to some words of inspiration from the 18 players taking their final bow at Heinz Field.

"We just told (the underclassmen) to leave it out on the field," said Graham, who moved into third on the school's all-time rushing list. "If you're not ready to play, stay inside this locker room. That's one of those attitudes that we have."

The Panthers have alternated two-game losing streaks and two-game winning streaks all fall, leading first-year coach Paul Chryst to joke he hoped the pattern would continue over the final two weeks, allowing the Panthers to play beyond Dec. 1.

It shouldn't be an issue if Pitt can take the intensity it showed during an emotional Senior Day to South Florida next week.

Chryst began the afternoon hugging each of the seniors during pregame introductions, a sign how of hard he's worked to restore a sense of trust between the players and the program after Pitt went through four coaches in a span of 14 months, culminating with Chryst's hiring in January.

The seniors believe Pitt is heading in the right direction, and then went out and showed it by having little trouble with the Scarlet Knights in the final game between the two teams for the foreseeable future with Pitt heading to the ACC next fall.

Pitt outgained Rutgers 365-207, won the field position battle and controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage after finding its footing in the second quarter.

"We put it together today," wide receiver Mike Shanahan said. "I don't think we've played 60 minutes like that all season."

Certainly not on defense.

The Scarlet Knights had the ball eight times in the first half, and punted eight times. Nova never got comfortable in the blustery conditions and Pitt smothered whichever Rutgers back happened to carry the ball.

"If you watched Pitt over the course of the year, you saw that they were capable of playing really good on offense and defense," Rutgers safety Duron Harmon said. "They beat up on Virginia Tech and should have beat Notre Dame, so we knew it wasn't going to be easy coming in here."

It wasn't.

Sunseri hit Shanahan for a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to put the Panthers up and Graham made it 14-0 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge before the Panthers showed just how far they've come under Chryst's direction during a flawless 2-minute drill late in the half.

Taking over at the Pitt 45 with 1:19 to go, Sunseri directed the Panthers 55 yards in nine plays, the final one a perfect strike to Ed Tinker from 13 yards out that put the Panthers up 21-0 at the break.

Kevin Harper tacked on a 39-yard field goal early in the third quarter to make it 24-0. Rutgers finally got on board on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Nova to Brandon Coleman late in the third quarter but the 2-point conversion failed and Rutgers never threatened to make it interesting.

The blowout left the Scarlet Knights plenty of time to ponder how things went wrong while getting a headstart on what will be a de facto Big East championship game at home on Thursday night.

"All the marbles are out there for us, and it's a short week," defensive tackle Scott Vallone said. "So, this is for everything. This is why you play football. Sure, we're disappointed, but we still have everything to play for Thursday night. And that has to be our focus."

Mom Took the Pledge | Hey? It's Jet Here

Hey It?s Jet Here.

Mom participated in only ONE Black Friday experience yesterday.? She visited Pet Supermarket @ 8:45 a.m. to take advantage of their special on cat litter.? There you have it.? She took care of some other errands on her way home and then worked on the computer all day.

Mom read so many emails today (over 400) that she forgot to save the site the following list came from.? (And you wondered why she?didn?t?transcribe my responses to your generous comments over the last few days!)

One of the emails asked humans to take the pledge to celebrate the holiday season a little differently offering the following alternatives: (I?m taking the liberty to express my thoughts along the way.)

  • GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME by creating your own gift card for a service (e.g., babysitting, carwashing, petsitting, chores, making dinner, organizing an outing). Hey Mom? you could give us gift certificates of time to visit different dog parks!
  • GIVE A HANDMADE GIFT like a memoir of cherished memories with that person, a book of family recipes, a collage of pictures and mementos, or a calendar filled with the birthdays and anniversaries of friends and family. Hey Mom? you could make us handmade treats!
  • OFFER TO TEACH A SKILL YOU POSSESS (e.g., knitting, photography, computer skills, financial planning, a foreign language, music lessons, canning tomatoes, cooking a favorite recipe). Hey Mom? you could teach us to swim in the bay!
  • CONSIDER LESS GIMMICKY, LESS COMMERCIAL GIFTS for children, such as arts/crafts supplies, books, a magnifying glass, or building blocks. Hey Mom? building block toys would work for us, or? we could make ripped paper art together!
  • CREATE A PAPERLESS HOLIDAY LETTER on the computer and email it to friends and family. Hey Mom? you could tell us holiday stories about ?Mugs *OTRB*, Koko *OTRB* and Fluffy *OTRB*!
  • HAVE A WHITE ELEPHANT PARTY at the office instead of a traditional gift exchange, where each person brings a wrapped secondhand item in good condition. Hey Mom? we?ll bring you used shoes (more on this Monday) and you can bring us second hand toys!
  • DRAW NAMES IN YOUR FAMILY FOR GIFT-GIVING (for extra fun and surprise, make it ?Secret Santas?), so that you can put more time and thought into one gift instead of having to give to several people.? Hey Mom? we could draw names and you can help us with the gifting process, right?
  • SHOP FOR USED ITEMS for all or most of your holiday gifts (e.g., local thrift store, Craigslist, Freecycle, used products on Amazon or eBay).? Hey Mom? I hear garage sales sell stuffies really cheap.? Who cares if they only last a few minutes?
  • SHARE THE GIFT OF MUSIC by caroling, and include visits to elderly neighbors or a nursing home. Or, gather friends and family for an in-home holiday sing-a-long.? Hey Mom? music helps distract us during boom/streaky lights season!
  • GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY by preparing care packages for the homeless, or volunteering at an organization to help those in need during the holiday season.? Hey Mom? we?ll visit humans and make them happy! ?(here?s the link for that picture? too cute!)
  • ADOPT A ?LESS IS MORE? ATTITUDE toward holiday decorating. Opt for natural trimmings such as clippings from local evergreens and holly bushes.? Hey Mom? I think we have this one down already!!!
  • SAVE PAPER by wrapping gifts in newspaper comics, junk mail, paper bags decorated with markers, old maps, phone books, or other reused paper. Hey Mom? we?re not picky with how our presents arrive!
  • PREPARE YOUR HOLIDAY MEALS with as many seasonal, locally grown, and/or organic foods as possible.? Hey Mom? you got this one!
  • REDUCE JUNK MAIL by removing your name from mailing lists of unwanted holiday catalogs.?? Hey Mom? you get most of your pet catalogues online now, right?

Another great holiday plan day.

Thanks to?Life With Dogs,?Confessions of the Plume?and? Two Little Cavaliers?for hosting the Saturday Blog Hop.?
